Ovarian cancer and travelling abroad

Less than one minute read time.
I have just finished treatment for ovarian cancer. I was diagnosed in April 2006 and it has come back twice after my original diagnosis. I have the chance to go to the States with my husband on business and wonder if anyone else on this site has been to America with cancer. I am currently in remission but would appreciate any advice.

I went to te USA last year when I was told my cancer was terminal - I went with an insurance company who charged a fortune (£2,076 to be exact) - I now recommend you try Mia online who do now (but didn't then) insure people with serious health issues to travel to the USA. At the minute because I havent been off treatment for long enough I cant travel to USA - but I think it is worth you contacting them for a quote.(google them then ring the number - they will take some details and then phone you back)  In USA there is no public health care and you are not covered by your EHIC card - so I strongly recommend you do get insurance and DECLARE your illness. Mia online ask you to have a letter from your oncologist stating you are fit to travel (which you keep with you throughout your holiday/travel) and that He/She writes a note in your medical records stating the same. I hope you have a wonderful holiday where are you planning on going to? Jools xx

I tried Mia online and they wouldn't insure me. They say it is because the cancer spread from its original site even though I am cancer free at the moment. I can get insurance but not for the cancer. I have been to the states before whilst having cancer but being as it had come back a third time I was a bit nervous. My husband is going on business and then we were going to have a couple of days in New York before flying home.

    Hi Catherine,

I don't know anything about insurance but I personally would currently avoid flying and other crowded places due to risk of swine flu - especially if you have a compromised immune system.  My niece who lives and works in central London is down with it, and it's not nice!

In Sept I am due to start 3rd lot of chemo for recurrent (inoperable) ovarian cancer and have over past nine years realised what is important to me (life irself, close family and friends, and staying as well as possible).

But it is a hard decision for you - good luck with what ever you decide.  And keep smiling.
