Dad doing really well

1 minute read time.

I first wrote on this blog in July, at that time my Dad had just been diagnosed with primary cancer of the colon & secondary in the liver&lungs.

Dad had been given weeks rather than months to live, that was 5 months ago ! He is 80 & was initially told that no treatment would be given !!!! After much internet research we 'pressganged/bullied' the consultant into giving chemo to my Dad, he was after all, an extreamely fit 80yr old (prior to this earth shattering news).

I am pleased to report that after 3  x 2weekly chemo pill courses, he is still a fairly healthy, very independant/antagonistic 80 year old DAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!  He has put back on nearly a stone & his liver function has improoved.

My brother is getting married on 1st October, he was told in July to bring his wedding forward as Dad may not be with us by then - I am very pleased to report that at this moment, 2 weeks away from my brother's wedding, Dad is doing well & should be walking down the isle at my brother's wedding in 2 week's time.

Every one I talk to tells me this is most unusual & I should prepare for the worst !! It's difficult at the moment.  We have just put our house on the market, Dad wants to move to somewhere in the country where all he can see & hear is the trees & birds etc.... Don't know if we can sell & move in time for him but we will try.

hi, just read your post on your dad, he sounds an amazing gentleman and his strong character comes through in your words... My mum was diagnosed with secondary bone cancer in August then a week after we were told this, we were then told she had it secondary in the liver and the primary still remains unknown...She had 5 days radiotherapy for her bone cancer and we are awaiting an appointment with the liver consultant. we have been told its unlikely she'll have chemo for the liver as it wouldnt make any difference and it would be putting her through too much. She has no feeling in her bladder and bowels and is incontinent as the nerves have no feeling because of the tumour on her spine.. she doesnt know about the liver as she didnt want to know but the dr's told me it was a matter of months for her...I find myself, living, breathing my mum trying to soak up every second she is here... She lost nearly three stones in weight, she is getting about her flat with a frame and i have taken her out in a wheelchair.. i keep making her fresh soup helping to build her up i dont sleep and am in charge of everything ... i am scared to be honest i keep hearing stories of how quickly it can dramatically change, her stomach is considerably swollen aswell...your dad sounds amazing how emotional the wedding will be but what wonderful memories your family will have..i pray he has a fantastic day with all the family. sorry if i've gone on abit i'm new to this with kind regards to you Lainey 26

What a lovely, determined man your dad must be!

The mum of a friend of ours has colon cancer with spread in her liver and lungs. She's 83.  She too, is astounding everyone, battling a nasty chest infection a few weeks ago, and still going out for drives with her husband, reading stories to her grandchildren when they visit.

I hope your brother has a fantastic wedding, and your dad enjoys every minute of it.  Jeanie x
