Some advice please as not so good after all!

1 minute read time.

Left hospital Thursday to be re-admitted in emergency Friday with severe hypocalceamia! My face and hands had 'locked' completely and it was a very scary experience! got intra veinous calcium injection, than on a drip for 24 hrs and now on calcium supplements as found out that the parathyroid glands were damaged during surgery - but one was was re-attached to the muscle and will hopefully start working again in a couple of months! Discharged from hospital this afternoon - my (ex?) boyfriend is kindly looking after me as my 13 year old doesn't want to see me.... can't handle my being poorly!!!  I still ache all over following Friday's 'cramping' and my arms are a mess after all the blood tests etc. I have a question (nobody at the hospital could answer): since the surgery last Tuesday, everything I eat or drink tastes bitter. It's ok to start with but when it gets to the back of my tongue, it feels ever so bitter! nobody knows why - and nobody really cares either - but I've hardly eaten because everything tastes so disguting. Has anybody experienced the same or knows why? I am also really struggling to sleep - was given tablets in hospital but now that I'm home, I've nothing and although my body is tired, I feel very restless. It is now nearly 3 am and no sign of feeling sleepy! Any advice? Thank you.Love.Lauren

Wow, you've had a rough time of it Lauren!

I can't help with the bitter taste but wanted to stop and say, I hope the rest of the treatment goes smoothly.

    Good luck, love & strength

Hi lo so sorry youve had it rough hope youre feeling better by the time you read this. I know hypocalcaemia can be a problem after your op due to the parathyroid glands being in such close contact with the thyroid hp the remaining tissue 'starts up' ok.I had a parathyroidectomy  a couple of years ago for a benign tumour, know a little about it. I know you can have insomnia with calcium problems but of course youve only just had your op so youll hardly be relaxed its early days yet. Have tried to research the bitter taste prob but not come up with anything definite. There seems to be documented cases of this happening after ent surgery, (the nerve suppling the back of the tongue is responsible for those taste buds) wonder if it mite be due to anaestetic tube or the anaesthetic itself. If it doesnt improve let the medics know how badly its affecting you. Very best wishes for a speedy recovery, love and blessings, Karen xox
