The festive season is over, everyone is back in the office, and resolutions are being stuck too, but you can do one more good thing to start the New Year and remind employers not to forget their legal responsibilities towards people diagnosed with cancer.
Each year 109,000 people of working age are diagnosed with cancer in the UK. In fact, there are more than 700,000 people of working age living with a cancer diagnosis. Often, employees diagnosed with cancer will continue to work after, or even through their treatment. But less than 40% of people with cancer realise that they are protected by law against workplace discrimination. We want to continue to make people aware of our Working through Cancer campaign which aims to raise awareness of the Equality Act 2010.
And in case you’ve let your resolution slip already, there is one very quick thing you can do to get your new year off to a positive start: remind your boss about the Equality Act. Macmillan’s guide for employers is available here
And if you have any issues, questions or queries about working through cancer you can also download Macmillan’s making it work report or call freephone 0808 808 00 00.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
