Hello everyone,
I’m Sam and I am the public affairs intern at Macmillan. I have been supporting the public affairs and campaigns teams in their work to influence parliamentarians. I’m sure many of you are aware of our Putting the Fair into Welfare campaign, which we have been working on for some months now. The campaign is about to enter a really exciting period and I wanted to update you on our activities and let you know how you can get involved.
September is political party conference season, which is a particularly busy time for the team at Macmillan. The Liberal Democrat conference is particularly important this year, as they will be voting on whether their party should oppose the government's plan to take away a person's Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) after just one year. This could mean a person with cancer losing up to £94 a week.
If the Liberal Democrat conference votes to support this motion, it will be much harder for their MPs and Lords to vote with the Government – helping us to achieve our goal of changing the legislation for the benefit of people affected by cancer. Consequently, we are campaigning hard to get as many Liberal Democrat delegates to support this motion. You can take action by emailing your local Liberal Democrat representative. You can learn more about how these changes will affect people affected by cancer here.
Please post any questions and I’ll do my best to answer them.
Take care,
Sam
