Hi everyone,
I wanted to update you on our welfare reform campaign and thank you all for your efforts to help us in our work at the Liberal Democrat Party conference. As you may be aware the Liberal Democrat conference voted on whether their party should oppose the Government's plan to take away a person's Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) after just one year. If this is implemented those affected could lose up to £94 a week. The vote was passed unanimously, sending a clear message to the Government that the Liberal Democrat Party is unhappy with this part of the legislation.
This is a great result for Macmillan and gives us belief that we can achieve a change in the proposed law as it passes through the House of Lords in the coming months. A big thank you to all of the 1500 e-campaigners who took action and emailed their local Liberal Democrat representative – the message certainly got through! The campaign is far from over however; we are currently convincing peers to make changes to the legislation and are talking with a range of stakeholders to ensure that as many people as possible are aware of these unfair proposals.
We will be sure to keep you updated on the progress of the campaign and will inform you of any future actions you can take. If you would like to find out more about our Put the fair into welfare campaign click here.
Take Care,
Sam
