GRAPE SEED EXTRACT

Less than one minute read time.
Hi there, A friend has just told me about grape seed extract. She had breast cancer five years ago, had a lumpetomy and radiotherapy. Whilst on radiotherapy she discovered grape seed extract and said that she could not believe how well she felt. She used to take three capsules a day and still takes it five years down the line. Anyone heard of this?? Thanks Pauline x

There's certainly a lot of this stuff being advertised on the old www.  I just checked on the National Cancer Institute website.  Grape seed extract is another  source of anti-oxidants.  It has been cited in improving all sorts of health conditions.  However a study funded by the NCI found no reduction of hardening of breast tissue after radiation.  There are certain side-effects to be wary of, namely headaches, itcy scalp, dizziness and nausea.  It warns to tell doctors you are taking this if you are also taking prescribed medicines, as they can interact negatively.

I think the placebo-effect can come into play with some of these herbal tablets:  we just feel so sure that because a friend of a friend said so, we too feel some improvement - and as the mind can work wonders, it's always worth a try!

Even if as Penny says, the benefits are mostly placebo effect, if it makes you feel better, go for it.

Just don't expect a miracle cure.  Such things come, or they don't.
