In The Beginning

1 minute read time.

Turning 70 on May 18 2021 and recently confirmed with tongue cancer T1 N1 M0 HPV positive. Due to commence radiotherapy soon.

I had a heart bypass in April 2018 and my GP promised me that I would be a new man afterwards - the ‘new nan’ never arrived. I had various tests and ended up being diagnosed with Myositis; which was confirmed by blood test that were positive for two auto-antibodies, NXP-2 & SCL-72, in March 2020. Instead of waiting for a muscle biopsy confirmation (due to Covid restrictions being put in place) I was whipped into hospital and given 1500ml of IVIG and pumped full of steroids (prednisolone) for months and a further 1500ml IVIG infusion in June. Mycophenolate was added to suppress my immune system further. At the time I did not realise that my immune system would be very much compromised and I was eventually cleared by Rheumatology and Neurology with no improvement in my general health.

I had my first Covid vaccination on February 13 where a Pfizer specialist advised me to have a swollen lymph node looked at by my GP.

After numerous expedited scans, and a tonsillectomy and biopsy, my diagnosis was confirmed on 5 May and here we are.

  • Well, that’s me officially 70 years of age Grinning

I now have dates for RT Planning (Tomorrow), PEG Implant (25th) and dental treatment (10/06). Require to have bloods taken at GP surgery pre-PEG + a Covid test.

I also will receive my second Covid vaccination tomorrow morning - 11 days past the 12 weeks 1-2 gap; the delay is due to pre- and post-surgery and recovery, plus a local shortage of the Pfizer vaccine.

When I was diagnosed, and because it was near, I started a Facebook Birthday Appeal in favour of Macmillan Cancer Support and it currently stands at £370; which I am quite pleased with Grinning

  • I hope you realise that 'dental treatment' can mean having all your teeth taken out. If you have your own dentist I would advise you to ask him if they all need to be taken out. The hospital may take out more than necessary. I am now without any teeth and there are many foods i cant eat.

  • I have had an initial dental examination and it was decided not to remove any teeth. I will only return to for cleaning and scaling and to get a fluoride tray to help strengthen the teeth.

The procedure to install the alternative RIG Feeder was successful today. It’s now about 7 hours since completion and I think I will need Oramorph quite soon

    Radiotherapy begins on Monday
