Bertie Bassetts Journey through AML

1 minute read time.
We were on a much needed holiday when we got our first clue that all was not well. Bert had had Bronchitis all through our holiday and against his better judgement he went to see the Dr the day we were due to fly home. The Dr in Turkey was amazing done loads of tests and told us after only 45 mins we were told that his white cell count was really low at 1.2 and that we were to see a Dr on our arrival home. He was admitted on the 15th of September and we were given the diagnosis on the 18th the day after his 56th birthday. His count dropped rapidly to 0.1 in a couple of days but then stopped at that. The Dr had told us that his chemo would start the following week. However she changed her mind, and sent him home after 2 weeks of antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals, which was just as well as I developed Laryngitis and a chest infection. I was amazed that he never got any infection. We went to the out patient clinic 2 weeks later and were told he was stable to come back in 2 weeks. on our return we were told he had to be admitted on Mon 2nd Nov despite the fact that his blood was still stable and he was to be starten on Chemo on Tue 3rd. The 1st lot of chemo mad him look dreadful I was not expecting that. However, he did look a little better the next day although he was very breathless and had tracking up his arm where the chemo had been put in. But all of that turned out to be ok. Here we are on day 4 gutted to find out that his brothers are not match for Bone Marrow, that left him feeling very upset and down in the dumps. So we will see what tomorrow brings Goodnight

Hi Debbie the 5 days are actually 7 because of the 3 different chemo's 1 bag goes on for an hour then 2 flushes, 2nd bag for an hour another 2 flushes then he is allowed 20 mins for a shower then the Cytarabine for 22 hours. He has settled was just really upset because he did not know about it. I try to prepare him for whatever I can but they never bothered to tell us. Consultant thinks he does not need to know!! he has had a lot of Nausea and his face is bright red, he is trying really hard to eat all his meals asn so far is doing well even if it is just soup and sweet. he is sleeping quite well depending on when the chemo needs changed it can be in the middle of the night when he gets up for a shower so that tends to waken him. Today when I go up I am hoping he will be finished with the chemo and he will be able to get about a little . We ar now just waiting I am off work today so heading up quite soon.

    Speak soon Love Teri

Although Bert is feeling quite well in himself he has been really weepy for days now and it's really difficult to watch him going through this. He went for his Ct scan today also a kidney, liver, and spleen scan I assume that these are just to make sure everything is ok as only the CT scan was mentioned. His Picc line is still not in are we surprised by that! I don't think so. Urology dept have phoned the house looking for him that was really quick they are going to get someone to phone the hospital tomorrow so hopefully he will be seen soon for that and we won't have to worry anymore about his PSA.

I am really tired not sleeping well at all this time round so going to try and get a decent sleep tonight.

    Hi Teri,

Hows is Bert today? Hope he feels a bit better. Sounds a right ordeal does this lot of chemo. No wonder he is weepy. I'm sure it is for his benefit even though he might feel lousy now. Things will get better.

Hope you are sleeping. I must admit I feel a bit run down too as I keep worrying about my mum.

She is doing well though, so I really should try and stop it.

    Hugs & Kisses

    Binnie xx
