help with pain

Less than one minute read time.

hi i am new to this.  I have come out the otherside of treatment but had a very bad time with chemo called docetaxal.  I am on gabapentin for neuropathic pain this has worked very well but have now found that i am having really bad joint pain in my hands and knees.  I have had xrays and scans and they say that there is nothing wrong could it be the tablets that cause this.  I am also on amitriptylne and co codamol.  i just would like to be out of pain. i wondered if i stop taking them if it would go away.  any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Avril

Both Gabapentin and Amitryptiline are used for the treatment of nerve pain and I'm glad they're doing they're job.

Docetaxel can cause pain, but if it was responsible for the joint pain, I would have expected it to have started while you were having treatment, and now that treatment is over, to clear up.  If there's nothing on any scans or X rays, that's good news.

Obviously the co-codamol isn't doing the job, so I would suggest you speak to your GP, as an anti-inflammatory might be more effective.  He'll know whether this is appropriate given your other meds and current state of health, but together with the co-codamol, this should be effective.

So please do make an appt to see your GP as soon as possible and ask for help.  I hope you get this sorted out very soon.

    Take care

Hello avrilk,, my cancer was diagnosed in 2007 - I only had one dose of chemo as couldn't tolerate it but had radiotherapy to left breast site and a year on herceptin - I too suffer terrible pain - lower back, leg joints.  I now take co-codamol, tramadol, prozac, amytriptilyne (50mg) and sleeping pill just to help me through the night.  It does seem some of us suffer from this after cancer treatment - obviously we've been bombed with so much medication to poison our bodies, maybe that's why.  In any event, I just keep taking the meds and try and get on with it.  I must say though, I am trying to lose some weight in the hope this will help, especially as I am going for reconstruction (diep) soon.  Keep as well as you can and, if necessary, ask for referral to a specialist or physiotherapy.  Wish I could give you some good answers but, hey, you're not alone.  Ann x
