Need advice!! Anyone had pleura/lung/pericardium/diaphragm removal?

Less than one minute read time.
Hi guys, I need help. My step dad has meothelioma. He was given 7 months to live in February, has had two lots of chemo and has now been told that surgery may be option. His surgeon is one of a handful of surgeons that perform this surgery. It is to remove his lung, pleura, pericardium around the heart and also the diaphragm. I have heard such awful reports about this operation, and a lot of Surgeons refuse to do it. We find out more on Monday but I need help. This operation has shown to worsen people. I need real life stories both good and bad. This is such a massive decision.

    Hi Susan

It might be worth joining the mesothelioma group on Mac. I am sure there will be some useful advice and information from people there, it has for me. Hope this helps.

Hi Susan my dad was diagnosed with Mesothelioma in January like you we are all devested. He wasnt given a prognosis because neither my mum or dad wanted to know. He was offered 4 sessions of chemo maybe some radio or more chemo later, the specialist nurse was against surgery as she said in most cases was unsuccessful?? but i'm sure they wouldn't have offered it to your step dad if it was the case. Where is he being treated? Also I suppose it depends on his age and health. I have read some stories in the Mesothelioma group about people who have had the op, but I still dont know if its cureable. My dad has had 2 lots of chemo and seems to be doing ok, the chemo makes him tired but after a week he picks up and gets on with everyday things. We are hoping to get a holiday together after his treatment has finished. My dad will be 75 in few weeks and up to this he was a very healthy and fit man, he was still working part time up to November. Sorry I cant help you much, let me know how you get on, Take care Susan xx

Thanks guys. His oncologist is dead against it but the surgeon is saying he'll do it. It's a high mortality rate so just don't know what to think. All we can do is support whatever decision he makes but the more I see the more I don't want him to have it. It's also still a trial. Xxx
