I need as much information on diagnosis of lung cancer as possible please

Less than one minute read time.
My nan has been diagnosed with lung cancer on Friday just gone, they have also said it has spread to her liver, and yesterday told her it's in her lymph nodes too, BUT she hasn't has any biopsies done, they're getting all this information of a CT scan, can they diagnose of a scan? Because with me having melanoma last year, I thought that cancer could only be diagnosed properly with biopsies, I'd really appreciate any information even if it's not 100% right, she got taken to hospital a few days ago because she couldn't breath at all, they said obviously the cough was down to her "lung cancer" but since she has been in hospital, the oxygen and antibiotics for a lung infection seam to be curing her cough, and as far as I'm aware, only things like chemo, laser treatment, and things like that can control symptoms of lung cancer..

As far as I know, they can see cancer, either on a scan or with a camera.  The biopsies are to determine how aggressive the cancer is.  Lung cancer presents differently to a bowel cancer on a scan for example, they have different characteristics.  Your nan may be offered both chemo and radio to reduce the size of the tumours and to prolong her life.

Hi Porschya,  Sorry to read about your nan. It depends on the type of cancer as to how precise testing has to be for a first diagnosis, some are types difficult to pin down looking just like fine dust speckles where others to the trained eye can be a lot more obvious :-(

We know little about Lung cancer or secondaries but can give you some links to more information which may help you understand what she will be dealing with.

There are two Macmillan booklets first one is Understanding Lung Cancer and the second is Understanding Liver Cancer Secondaries (from lung cancer or other primary) When loaded these can be saved to your computer for future ref using 'save as'  from your browser menu.

There is also some quick ref guide pages with many links about Liver Secondaries which can be found here and Lung Cancer which is here.

Hope this helps, George & Jackie (breast group)
