As part of the planning process for radiotherapy with a low weekly dose of chemo for added flavour I was back at hospital mid week for a further scan and a hearing test. This was because I already have tinnitus, which is not a problem, but treatment can cause tinnitus and so it was decided that a baseline test might be sensible.
So off to Audiology. My husband sat with me while I was waiting to be called. We both noticed a loud whirring fan above our heads. There were 2 very large pillars which blocked the view across the waiting area. Most people seemed to be wearing hearing aids. Just about everyone was reading books or magazines or looking at phones.
A nurse appeared, partially blocked by a pillar, and said someone’s name in the quietest little voice. She did this several times before anyone looked up and noticed her! We immediately started to giggle. A young man came out from a room and again, partially hidden by a pillar called someone else in what can only be described as a stage whisper. No one moved and he had to repeat the name until eventually some said, ‘Did you say my name?’ More giggles !
This happened about 3 more times! By then I was uncontrollable. And guess what? I missed my own name!
Wonder why they don’t put names up electronically - the place seemed to have a lot of screens with messages on. Or even a loud speaker system!
It ended up as quite an entertaining afternoon!
