After eight weeks of learning the ropes of stand-up comedy, I am having my first comedy standup show at the Pembroke Castle, Gloucester Avenue, Chalk Farm North West London.
I ikeep telling myself that if my tutor didn't think I could do it, I wouldn't be doing it. Then I think of the audience looking at me and go "AAAAARGGGH!"
However, I know darn well that Mum thought I was funny and that if she was here she would be behind me all the way. That's partly why I signed up for the course. Without her, life at home was, well, silent and unfunny. Comedy and telling each other jokes and making each other laugh was the backbone of our lives together.
She used to fall about laughing at my impersonations and accents.
Being on a course like this helped keep comedy at the core of whatever I was doing. And, of course, seeing the funny side of life definitely helps you cope with its more serious aspects. I have replaced the jokes we used to tell each other with jokes and stories I tell in public. I want to keep on doing it, just for her.
So if anyone's got a free night tomorrow night, is in the London area and fancies seeing some brand-new comic talent (eight of us) come on down! It's £5 on the door or in advance. It's a great venue with a lovely atmosphere, bar and great food. Nearest Underground station Chalk Farm tube. Not only that, it's a favourite haunt of Kate Moss and Jude Law. So there you are.
I'll be posting here about how it went ....
