I was feeling quite pleased with my last post. Got some nice positive feedback, brightened up a few people’s day for them, and got some good suggestions for future blog entries. Everything was going perfectly until I opened an email. From a Donny Girl. Containing a recommendation for some music for me to listen to. The Osmonds.
I suppose I bought this on myself. I always said I would try out any music that was new to me. And I had to be honest and say I couldn’t name any Osmonds hit off the top of my head. So I found myself yesterday afternoon apprehensively preparing to listen to the samples on the Amazon site from “Osmondmania!” All 28 of them.
I was a little alarmed to see that this was an album of songs by the family. There they are smiling enthusiastically on the cover. Including Jimmy. I frantically looked through the titles and was very relieved to find that “Long Haired Lover From Liverpool” had fortunately been omitted from the compilation. But everything else seemed to be there. Including “Puppy Love”. There is one advantage to listening to the free samples on Amazon. You don’t get the whole song.
Anyway I completed my task. And I did it honestly. Didn’t miss anything out although my finger did start hovering uncontrollably towards the forward button when Marie started singing “Paper Roses”.
I now have to make a public confession. There were 3 songs that I liked enough to download. I am now the proud owner of “Love Me For A Reason”, “Crazy Horses” and the appropriately titled “The Proud One”.
So to all the Donny Girls out there. I am very, very sorry. I watched a recent YouTube clip of Donny on a US TV interview. He looks great for his age. Tan and teeth are perfect. Came across as a charming, warm, witty and very articulate man. And I always have great respect and admiration for any musician whose career has spanned several decades.
I think the problem is envy. Donny is just too perfect and so were all the Donny Girls I knew. They didn’t get frizzy hair and mud up their socks when it rained. They didn’t rush late into class clutching the wrong books and a fountain pen that leaked. You would never catch them swearing under their breath in cookery class with their uniform coated in flour. They never got involved in dubious behaviour like sneaking out the school gates on Friday lunchtime to get a bag of chips.
Well my world isn’t anywhere near perfect and I always suspected it’s the same for David. Suspicions were confirmed when I read his autobiography with the intriguing subtitle “Fear And Loathing On The Partridge Family Bus” and saw the tabloids recently. I’m sticking with David through good times and bad. My favourite song is “Could It Be Forever?” Yes, forever a David Girl!
