8. Second week of treatment.

2 minute read time.

Over the weekend I am now getting headaches towards the end of the afternoon, not bad enough to take anything for, but enough to be aware of.

Also Wake up on Sunday to find my hearing is a bit muffled, apparently this is one of the potential side effects, so my wife tells me, I cant remember this being mentioned, but will get use to it and hopefully it will come back to normal in time.

Monday 28th July.  radiotherapy session is 08:30 hrs, so up early for the trip into Hospital, the roads are a little quieter, probably due to the schools and University’s being on summer holiday, anyway we arrive half an hour early and are called through and session completed by my original appointment time.

I asked the radiologist at the session about my muffled hearing and she confirms that this is a side effect and that once the treatment is complete then my hearing should return to normal.

Also today I had a delivery that was organised by the PEG nurse, ie more syringes, a belt to hold the tube around my stomach and spare parts for the tube itself. Cant see me using the belt, but grateful for the delivery.

Tuesday 29th July. Radiotherapy session went ok, the mask is now always too tight on the first attempt to bolt it to the table, one “shim” needs to be removed to make it more comfortable.

Wednesday 30th July. Radiotherapy and then my first of the weekly meetings with the doctor to discuss my progress. Radiotherapy session booked for11:40, struggled to find a parking space even though we arrived at 10:45, but after a long wait we eventually got parked. The sessions were running late so didn’t get called for my session until 12:00 hrs, we did check that the doctor was aware of the delay at the reception, which they said they would let her know. After a reasonable wait we saw the doctor at about 12:45, got weighed (72.85kg) Mentioned the muffled hearing which the oncologist would discuss this with her peers to decide on how my second chemotherapy session will go, if it will happen at all. Apparently the muffled hearing could get worse after another full does of Chemo and therefore may not return at all. Not something that I want to happen. They will let me know at next weeks meeting.

Thursday 31st July. Radiotherapy session went ok, but mentioned to the radiologist that I haven’t had a bowel movement since last Sunday, to which some laxative capsules were prescribed and to collect then on Friday morning.

Friday 1st August. Radiotherapy session went ok, then had to wait until 0900 hrs to collect my laxatives from the pharmacy. As a treat to completing my second week of treatment we decided we would have a drive out to Jeremy Clarkson’s pub The Farmers Dog as it was only about 30mins away. While there we have a cheese burger and chips, which was very good (but expensive) anyway by the time we got home I was in need of “a Bowel movement”, which means I don’t need to take the laxative…… Thanks Jeremy !!

  • I agree for the first few months I felt things moved very slowly, too slow at times, but as soon as the Churchill Hospital got involved it’s been very quick and very well looked after.
