16. Week 4 Post treatment 20th to 26th September

2 minute read time.

Saturday 20th September

I stopped taking my ibuprofen today as my pain levels are ok and I don’t think its adding anything, but will carry on with the paracetamol as well as the 8 bottles of Fortisip drinks a day.

For dinner had another ready meal, this time it was mushroom risotto, which went down very well, I could even taste the mushroom !!!!!  Is this the sign that my taste is returning…. I hope so !

Sunday 21st September

Still drinking ok and managing smallish amounts of food for dinner, sides of tongue still a bit sore, still only taking paracetamol during the day, plus mouth wash morning and night.

Monday 22nd September

Cheerio’s for breakfast, soup for lunch and jacket spud and beans for dinner, got on ok with all except the beans, they made my mouth sore each time I tried some, My guess is it’s the tomatoes causing the problem but won’t be having them again for a while!

Tuesday 23rd September

Cheerio’s plus soup and the tagliatelle with mushrooms for dinner, this was good, slight hint of taste I think!!

Wednesday 24th September

Consultation meeting back at the hospital, Meeting with team at 12:20.

Weight 73.1 kg, so still putting on a small amount of weight which is good.

Dietician suggested that as I eat more food, then reduce the number of fortisip drinks otherwise continue with up to 8 a day, try different flavours of food to stimulate taste buds, if something makes my mouth sore then don’t continue with that food for a week or so and then try again. Try both sweet and Savory.

I asked for her to organise more fortisip, she arranged for me to take away 36 more bottles and she will order another home delivery for me.

She will start the ball rolling to get the PEG removal booked in, as the waiting list for removal could be up to 10 weeks. The good news is that it’s not an overnight stay to do this!

Radiographer is pleased with progress, went through spreadsheet of meds, I asked if ibuprofen or paracetamol is better for my sore mouth and she suggested stay with paracetamol and if gets worse then add ibuprofen when needed. Went through what meds required she will prescribe more of the numbing mouthwash, 2 bottles to collect from pharmacy later today.

No need for another meeting, so next one is the 27th October with full team where they will, at that meeting, put a camera down my throat to check everything to see what next if anything. Possible scans in 3 months time to check!

Thursday 25th September

Friday 26th September

Continue to have cereals for breakfast, soup or a sandwich for lunch and small potions of dinner in the evenings, all going ok, although my mouth is occasionally sore, but nothing I cant cope with.

What Have I learnt?

To persevere with eating during the day, small amounts but often along with normal meals.
