Saturday 13th September
Continuing to drink the drinks normally but taking the meds through the PEG.
Managed to eat a yogurt at mid-day and had a small amount of scrambled eggs but no toast, this was ok on my throat but the top of my mouth was a bit sore.
Constipation has returned, so started taking the laxatives again.
Sunday 14th September
Still constipated, so had more laxative this morning and by late morning things started to move…. So much so it felt that I spent most of the day in the loo, what a way to spend the day, but at least things are working !!
Decided no more morphine, but to continue with paracetamol and ibuprofen and the cortisol drink.
The decision on stopping the morphine was based on the knowledge that it can cause constipation and that my pain level was a lot less so felt I would stop and see how I went.
Monday 15th September
Drinking normally and have decided to start taking my medication through my mouth as swallowing seems to be ok, rather than using the PEG.
So now I am not using the PEG for anything, its just flush out and twist each morning.
Tuesday 16th September
Decided that I need to start having breakfast each morning. So, as Toast might be a bit rough I have chosen to have cheerio’s for breakfast each day with milk. These go down ok as they go soft when soaking in milk for a while before eating.
Still trying to have all 8 bottles of fortisip drinks each day, but some days only 6 or 7 due to doing other things and forgetting the time of day !
Wednesday 17th September
Thursday 18th September
Still nothing going through the PEG and trying to eat something during the day as well as drinking the fortisip drinks.
Friday 19th September
Up to Norfolk for weekend, taking bag of drinks and meds with me, still not putting anything through the PEG other than daily flush and twist.
Soreness on tongue at the sides throat seems ok, it seems to be dependent on what I eat as to whether my mouth feels sore or not.
My throat isn’t as sore as the sides of my mouth when I eat anything.
For dinner had one of the ready meals of macaroni and cheese for dinner, which went down well, even if my taste hasn’t returned.
What Have Learnt?
Don’t leave it too long before going back to the laxatives !
To me it was a big milestone to stop using the PEG for both drinks and medicines, but I know its there if I need it.
Generally I feel ok, the sides of my mouth are sore, which I assume are ulcers, my throat is mildly sore when I swallow but not to the extent I cant use it.
