About Macmillan’s Online Community
The Online Community is part of Macmillan Cancer Support, a trusted organisation providing support to people affected by cancer. The Community Team works in alignment with Macmillan’s values of compassion, inclusion, and support, ensuring the community remains a safe and helpful space.
The Macmillan Online Community is moderated by the Online Community team. We are responsible for helping maintain a safe, supportive, and respectful space for everyone affected by cancer.
The Online Community Team supports conversations across the forums, ensures Community guidelines are followed, and helps users find appropriate support when needed. While we do not provide medical advice or replace clinical care, we are trained to help guide discussions and signpost users to relevant information and services.
How the Community Team Work
What we do
The Community Team is responsible for:
- monitoring community discussions to ensure they follow Community guidelines
- supporting members who may be experiencing distress or difficult situations
- removing or editing content that breaches community guidelines
- helping users navigate the community and find relevant support
- escalating safeguarding concerns where appropriate.
Safeguarding and wellbeing support
We take the safety and wellbeing of our members seriously. Where a post raises concerns about safety and wellbeing, it may be escalated to senior moderators or safeguarding leads for further review.
Depending on the situation, this may include:
- internal review by Macmillan’s Safeguarding team
- referral to appropriate support services
- action in line with Macmillan’s safeguarding policies.
What moderators cannot do
To keep expectations clear, moderators are not able to:
- provide medical diagnoses or treatment advice
- replace professional healthcare guidance
- offer emergency support
- make clinical decisions.
If you need urgent medical help, please contact your local emergency services or healthcare team.
- Call NHS 111 on 111 for England and Scotland
- NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47 for Wales
- Find an out of hours service on NI direct if you’re in Northern Ireland.
- Always call 999 in an emergency
Community Governance
The Community Team operates within a structured governance framework to ensure consistency, fairness, and accountability.
- The team is overseen by Macmillan’s Services Manager.
- Moderation decisions are guided by published Community guidelines. All members agree to these guidelines when creating an account.
- Escalations are reviewed by senior staff where required.
- Policies are reviewed regularly to ensure they remain up to date and effective.
-
This structure ensures that moderation decisions are consistent and aligned with organisational values and safeguarding responsibilities.
-
How Moderation Decisions Are Made
Moderation decisions are based on a combination of community guidelines, safeguarding requirements, and internal policy frameworks.
We ask all members to follow our Community Guidelines. We do not pre-moderate and cannot always check all the content on the community, therefore we rely on members reporting offensive and inappropriate content by using the flag button or by contacting community@macmillan.org.uk.
Please also note that whilst the Online Community is moderated outside of usual business hours, it is not moderated 24 hours a day – the Community team will aim to respond to all emails and messages within 2 working days.
Typical moderation flow:
- A post or comment is submitted for moderation if a members flags it or if our moderation filter picks up on a potential breach of our Community Guidelines.
- It is reviewed by the moderation team when we receive the report
- A decision is made in line with Community guidelines
- If needed, the content is escalated for senior review
- Appropriate action is taken (e.g. approval, edit, removal, or user guidance)
We aim to apply these guidelines consistently and fairly to support a safe and respectful environment for all users.
