Hi !
I haven’t seen many posts regarding the use of Lutetium 177 treatment and this of course makes me curious on how this type of treatment is handled / implemented within the health service in UK and of course in other nations
The treatment has been around for some time now, lots of data is published regarding efficacy, side effects and so on and you start to find a few studies that are going to use it earlier on in the treatment. Of course there is the discussions regarding the cost of the actual treatment and also any side effects down the road.
As you can see from my profile I’m one of those that have used it earlier on in my treatment because I’m a firm believer that the harder you hit the cancer the better results you get, hopefully….
Anyway, I’m curious to see how many have been in dialogue with the MO of the possibility to use it earlier in the treatment and what they think about pros and cons.
Update 2024-09-26: Found some really interesting studies where they used Lutetium 177 treatments for men with prostate cancer in lymph nodes and also men with one or two bone metasteses. The results where really good with high respons rates and really good remission times.

Hi alwayshope, that may well be a good option for me as I believe it matches my situation low volume pc with lymph node involvement. Do you know how often the sessions would be. Do you know if they have sibernife at the same location. Living in Cyprus it may be an option if not available here
Thanks
Geoff
Hi Geoff. The sessions are every 6 weeks but might involve a hospital stay of 2-3 days each time because you are radioactive and supposed to keep at least a meter away from other people during this time. On the bottom of my husband's PSMA PET scan it does say that Lutetium 177 could be a possibility for him.
We actually use Iaso hospital in Marousi for radiotherapy and my husband has had EBRT and SBRT there. Like everything in Greece, it is a matter of doing your homework on machines and the expertise of the oncologists. We chose to go private because of the quality of the machines so we pay privately for the radio oncologist and his physicist but we have subsided time on the machine which was around 350 Euros for 6 sessions of SBRT.
Thanks, was the sbrt daily for 6 days or extended.
Could be a way to zap the lymph node
Geoff
Thank you so much for the info. That would be a lot cheaper than the uk. We have a house in Greece but are in the uk at the moment for my husbands treatment of Radium 223. They think it may have failed and the next choice is Lutetium but would have to pay for it. It’s about £12000 a treatment. We have AMKA but not a full one as never worked in Greece so wouldn’t get any treatment subsidised. Just not sure where to start, Athens I suppose and enquire at each clinic.
Good luck with your husbands treatment.
We have AMKA and my understanding is that provided it is up to date (we have to renew it every February) then you are covered unless you are not of pensionable age in which case you need private health cover but in your husband's situation this is probably prohibitive and with exclusions.
Every time I try to use it they say it’s only valid at the public hospital not any private clinic/scan, drs etc. We are pensionable age but haven’t opted out of the NHS as we don’t live permanently in Greece. Maybe that’s why. I have friends who get discounts but they live there.
You are correct. As we emigrated before Brexit we still have rights to UK NHS treatment but I think things changed for those emigrating after Brexit so it is a judgement call for people opting to relocate now taking into account tax liabilities and access to healthcare.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
