Hi wondering if anyone could help me. Had a mole biopsy 5 weeks ago, booked to see consultant on Tuesday. Have just checked the NHS app and it list Lentigo Maligna, but next to it has a (M) in brackets. Does anyone know the meaning of this?

thanks in advance

  • Dear Marianfc

Thank you for getting in touch and welcome to the online community, I hope you find it a helpful and supportive way to communicate with others.  My name is Isobel one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialist, on the Macmillan Support Line.

Here at the Macmillan Support Line, we can give general information and support. We are independent from the NHS and don’t have access to medical records, so we can’t give personalised information, however we can give you general guidance.

I am glad to read that you have your appointment on Tuesday with a consultant, as we would always advise that any biopsy results are discussed fully with a specialist. They can give a fuller understanding of what this means for you as an individual,

The information that you have provided suggests that the biopsy result is showing a Lentigo maligna, this is a type of melanoma called ‘in situ’ melanoma. ‘In situ’ means that the cancer cells have not had the opportunity to spread anywhere else in the body.

These can be treated very successfully with surgery. Your consultant will discuss the next steps with you.

It can be difficult when you have read information like this on the NHS app and it can be tempting to reach for the internet for results. Sadly this is the worst thing to do as there is so much information on the internet, people tend to be lead down a rabbit hole of information that may not even be relevant. Your consultant will give the information that is individual for you.

Please know that you can contact our helpline and speak to one of our cancer information nurses if you need to discuss this in more detail. Sometimes a 2-way conversation can be very beneficial.

    Best wishes,

Isobel Y, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
