Hi all, just looking for some reassurance really

Hi all

So had surgery for Bowel cancer 12 months ago, followed by 6 months of Chemotherapy.

In that respect I am clear at the moment.

Basically recent surbeillance CT scans found 4 lung nodules, 2 in each lung. I then had a PET scan.

I had an appointment with the specialist doctor today and he stated that the nodules are less than 8mm and therefore didn't light up on the PET scan. He is of the opinion that they are cancer that have spread from my previous Bowel cancer.

I am going to have surgery on both lungs 6 weeks apart to remove the nodules - laser metastasectomy. Unfortunately can't have keyhole due to location of nodules so thoracotomies on both sides because the lesions are quite deep and small.

He said my prognosis is good and that hopefully once the nodules are removed I will be cancer free.

Not going to lie, the thought of 2 lots of surgery is daunting, I just hope it does the job.

Just looking for some reassurance I suppose.

  • Hi Adam - sorry to hear that; i also have lung nodules of that size and quite a few which are mere specks. I am having a lung resection in a few weeks to remove the two which are at 8mm. They think they are a spread from my womb cancer (found at same time) but wont know for sure until they can biopsy them (a ct guided biopsy failed). I am concerned about such a big op when they could be nothing at all - but i guess we don’t have much choice? Mine hadn’t grown between two scans and waiting to see if that has changed but they want to take them out anyway. I think if i (and perhaps you) didn’t already have a cancer they would likely monitor for growth for longer. I hope it goes well for you

  • Hi Tangle

Bloody nodules aye. Yeah, you are right, initially the radiologist wanted to wait another 3 months to see what the nodules did but because they had grown slightly and my history, my consultant said no and sorted the PET scan etc.

I literally saw my consultant on Wednesday for the PET scan results and had the appointment today regarding the nodules. Unbelievable treatment from all involved, i think they are all angels in disguise.

I hope all goes well for you too, keep me informed. You got this

  • Hi Adam, your following in my footsteps. I had my bowel op' last April and just had my lung op' 5 week ago only the right lung for me tho'. Must be a little daunting having both done. I'm feeling fine at the moment just waiting for my follow up appointment. It's bloody annoying isn't it but keep your chin up think about summer when it will all be over.

  • Hi Jagman

Thank you so much for replying, glad to hear you have had your lung op and are feeling fine. Please keep me up to date with how you are getting on. I am sure your follow up appointment will all be good.

  • Hi Adam,

My mother’s in a similar situation. She’s having her colon cancer (right-sided cecal cancer) removed tomorrow (along with around half her colon and neighbouring lymph nodes).
They’ve found about four nodules in the lungs which they think is metastasis from the colon. They’re small, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm. No metastises found in liver, pancreas, abdomen or distant lymph nodes.

She’s having 3 months of chemo from the beginning of February, and they’ll look at the nodules during/following chemo. They said they’ll possibly use ablation to get rid of them but I’d rather surgery as it might be more effective, although I don’t know.

Crossing everything for her tomorrow and the coming weeks, and I wish you all the best Thumbsup tone1

  • Hi FrankL

I hope all goes well for your mum tomorrow, I am sure it will, these guys are the best at what they do.

Please keep me updated and I will keep everything crossed for her too.

  • Heya Adam,

my mother’s surgery today seems to have gone to plan- no complications. So she’ll be in hospital now for 7-10 days and we’ll regroup and see where we’re after that.

Lung nodules, although small, are a worry, but hopefully we can operate to take them out before/after chemo.

    hope you’re wellThumbsup tone1

  • Hi ya

I am so glad all went well today. I am sure they will sort the lung nodules too.

Hopefully she will be able to get some rest in hospital over the next week or so too.

I am good thank you. Please keep in touch.

  • That's really good news.  Wishing your mum a steady recovery from her surgery.

  • Your mum's lung nodules are incredibly small and I don't think surgery would be offered, ablation is the best and does not involve surgery, however, many oncologists think a "watch and wait" approach is best on tiny lung nodules. Whatever treatment is offered however, it is your mum's decision and she should not be pressured into anything she does not want.

My ex-husband had colon cancer about ten year's ago. After a CT scan follow up, it was found he had metastasis to one lung resulting in several lung nodules measuring roughly the same as your mum's. His oncologist recommended a "watch and wait" approach with long term CT surveillance. These nodules have remained dormant with no activity whatsoever. Apparently people can have tiny lung nodules for many years without problems.

I was diagnosed with non-small cell adenocarcinoma in my left upper lung in late August 2023. I was subsequently offered surgery. I researched all the pros and cons of surgery versus radiotherapy and decided radiotherapy was the treatment I wanted because the risks of surgery, especially on left lung surgery as this could involve the heart, decided it for me. I did come under pressure to have surgery from my daughter, however, my son was very supportive and said that it was "my body my choice". I asked the consultant to provide stats on prognosis regarding surgery versus radiotherapy, his reply was "the outcome is more or less the same", especially with SABR radiotherapy which has a 95% success rate....surgery roughly 97%

It will be a year next week when my SABR treatment finished and everything is looking very positive, the lesion began shrinking within weeks of my treatment. I have only been having six monthly check-ups and didn't need three monthly ones because of the very positive results.

I hope your mum has a full recovery from her surgery, and please don't worry about the lung nodules, the specialists will know what is best for your mum and her treatment going forward.
