I had base of tongue cancer and finished chemotherapy and radiotherapy in May 2005. Then, nobody told me about the terrible repercussions on my teeth in later years and so far I have lost 3 bottom teeth at the front which just snapped off after being weakened by radiotherapy and I looked after mine religiously using duraphat 5000 toothpaste and tooth mousse hoping to hold off the inevitable.
The problem is that very little invasive dental work can be done as they are worried that infection could have extreme consequences, I have talked to the dentist about false teeth but they are reluctant (I currently have a partial denture) for the reason I have just outlined and the fact that my mouth is very dry and food sticks to my teeth and will be worse if I have full dentures.
I am due for my usual dilatation next week to ease my swallowing which I have every 18 months/2 years and wondered what experiences others have had in this regard.
Glad I’ll get it at the hospital as it’s so hard to get dental appointments. What about the varnish on your teeth? Do you ask the dentist or do the hospital tell you all this?
Hi Elaine. I get a varnish from my own dentist who has been marvellous seeing me right through covid.
I get it because I can’t use Duraphat. It makes my mouth burn for hours after I’ve used it. It says quite plainly in the instructions that you should avoid varnishes if you are using the toothpaste. My varnish is instead of the toothpaste. It’s just too much fluoride otherwise.

You used to be able to get duraphat from the GP at no cost if you were over a certain age but now they won’t prescribe it and insist you ask the dentist for a prescription and you have to pay for it.
I live in wales where Duraphat is free from GP. It’s a necessity for oral cancer patients, can’t understand that at all.

I’ve talked to a few people. It depends on individual trusts. Some people have to get it from Amazon. How long does the exemption last ? Just the five years?

Hi yes 5 years unless you can persuade g p to extend it. If you are on thyroxine because of radiotherapy you get exemption for life i know a few over 5 years and they’ve got it on exemption so they will get their duraphat as well
