Hi everyone

I was diagnosed with advanced local tonsil cancer earlier this year... after tonsillectomy I am now 2 weeks into radiotherapy and feeling very nauseous - retching and gagging (sorry) and have thrush! Its making me feel so low ... the past two weekends I have been sleeping and trying to ignore these unexpected (for me) symptoms.

I am taking a relaxant and anti nausea but still feeling so sick.

So far I only have a slight sore throat ... but my usual healthy appetite is failing - so Ensure, ice creams etc at the moment.

Has anyone else experienced this early on?? Frankly I am concerned that I might not cope when the other side effects kick in.. I ate and drank thru my tonsillectomy - which was very painful - so feel very upset I am not coping well at this stage.

Look forward to hearing from you

    Hi Elizabeth!

thanks for asking -  I am afraid I am constantly retching and vomiting - cant keep a thing down ....tried a nebuliser , mouthwash, murcilage and aspirin yesterday and spent the rest of the day throwing up .  so tired and losing weight - may have to resort to peg tube but dont want to rely on it as I have 3 weeks left ....

To be honest I feel desperate .......  sick tired hungry and very depressed...............

    How is hubby doing????????????

  • Hi

I was the same as you. I suffered badly from nausea for quite a while.
Can I ask why you say you are so reluctant to “rely” on you PEG?
That’s exactly what it’s there for and you might have three weeks left but your RT continues to work for 2-4 weeks after you finish.
I had to use my NG tube from the end of three weeks and for some weeks after I had finished treatment. That way I lost very little weight and had enough calories and protein to heal.
Taking most of my nutrition via tube meant I didn’t have to fight my food

    Its just a thought.

  • Hi Ezzie

The wise ones have already spoken but I don't think anyone covered candida/thrush so here's my contribution :-)

My husband is recovering well from treatment for SCC BoT, but has reached a bit of an impasse due to persistent thrush which he has had for several weeks now and it's getting him down.

Please discuss this with your team before it takes hold. They will most likely prescribe Nystatin liquid and / or an oral antifungal like fluconazole.  Candida / thrush is hard to shift, particularly when you're trying to put on weight and perhaps eating more sugar/ carbs than in the past (that's my theory) as well as dealing with compromised immunity. He's on the third bottle of Nystatin and has had a week of fluconazole, so it's not an easy fix unfortunately; and this on top of everything else!

    All the best

    Pip

My husband was diagnosed with HPV+ SCC BoT aged 57 in December 2019. He received 30 fractions of radiotherapy and 2 doses of Cisplatin in Jan/Feb 2020.
  • Hi

just confirming oral thrush is a pain I too couldn’t ghet Rod if it like pip says we are eating sugar laden things to put weight on but that has its negative things as well.  Plus always brush teeth 30 mins after eating with duraphat high fluoride toothpaste or similar  plus don’t hesitate to use the peg I had n g tube in?for 45 days it’s there for a reason so please use it.

Oh, Ezzie....I’m so sorry to hear that! Hang in there! This is temporary! Take it day by day, or hour by hour if needed. I know it’s so difficult, both mentally and physically

My husband is getting an hour of IV Fluids after radiation on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays........that has really helped him. He has been able to still eat normally this week, although today he did say that things are just beginning to slightly lose their taste. Not feeling sick has helped his spirits be lifted. He gets his next dose of chemo this coming Monday, so he is somewhat fearful that will restart everything.

I’m sure keeping you in my thoughts. Check in when you feel like it to say how things are going!

    Good morning

well after being on my knees with retching gagging vomiting ....... no sore throat ... no skin breakdown ... lost a stone in weight ... my local GP charity Rennie Grove have supported me throughout - especially at weekends - and have discussed my case with hospital as I was ready to give up the treatment - I was so frail.........

3 days later and on steroids for  short period - no nausea retching or gagging ....... eating normally (taste impaired) ...... still no pain ...... feeling tired but so v happy ......

This is a unique journey for each person... and so very hard ... but I am thankful that I am relatively pain free ... and coping!

I do hope your husband finds relief ... I understand the sickness debilitation - its mentally and physically challenging.

    Give him my regards .. well wishes - this is my 9 day countdown!!! 9 8 7 6 .........

    kind regards
