Radiotherapy delay

I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy on 28 June 2021. Margins & lymph nodes thankfully clear. MDT recommended radiotherapy & endocrine therapy. My appointment with the oncologist isn't until the 16 September 2021, 11 and a half weeks after surgery so my start date for radiotherapy is going to be much later than I had thought. I am fully recovered from surgery and am worried that delaying radiotherapy could have a detrimental effect on the outcome of my treatment. Does anyone know if there are national guidelines for the timing of radiotherapy after breast conserving surgery?

Hello Gwills. At least you know why you've had to wait for radiotherapy. My results were, thankfully, clear but I'm still looking at almost 12 weeks post surgery to actually see the oncologist - goodness knows when my radiotherapy will actually start. I feel totally let down by the system. Hope all goes well for you.

  • Have you rang them? I had my planning appointment for next week but rang and said I would be over my 12 weeks window. She got me in 2 days after my call but still can’t get the therapy any sooner as so busy. I’m sure if they were concerned you would be in there. People with more aggressive cancer I assume would be top of the queue. I look at it like at least they are not worried about me and I do take a bit of comfort in that ……. but I know what you mean. I felt forgotten even     Especially after surgery.

Thanks Gwills. I've phoned my breast care nurse, who has been brilliant. She has emailed oncology expressing my concerns but no change so far. Apparently an oncologist left & wasn't replaced so I assume they are understaffed. Hope you're right about prioritising patients.
