Hi All,
My wife is about to start chemo next week and after a failed port insertion (became infected and had to be removed) she is having to go the PICC line route. This is not a major problem, although she was looking forward to the relative freedom a port would have given her regarding showering and swimming.
So, in an effort that she may still be able to enjoy her swimming whilst undergoing chemo I was wondering if anyone was using a waterproof PICC line protector and if so which one and where did you get it ? Have looked on Amazon where there are mixture of products but each with varying reviews.
Any advice or help would be appreciated.
Regards

i assume you listened properly to what they said about the picc line?? I was told not to do repetitive arm movements, ie hoovering, ironing - and I'm sure your wife will be able to think of a few more things that perhaps you didn't hear.....
Hi
i tend to have what I call a shower/bath (if I don't want a proper full on bath) I sit on a bath stool and use the shower hose which does the job....if I'm having a bath then I can almost lie in it with the PICC line arm resting on the side.
You made me smile when you said about the cooking etc...seriously though...you are not supposed to use the PICC arm very much as mine has already come out by 1cm and certainly NOT allowed to carry anything heavy (as my chemist shouted at me when trying to heave my prescriptions out of the door (ensure drinks and the like) OR indeed do things like ironing and hoovering....nothing that could disturb that precious PICC line!!
luckily mine is in my left arm.
I also have a roll of the 'fabric' tubing stuff (can't remember what it's called) from Drs that I can cut to order and I find that helps protect the PICC plus reminds me to be careful of it too.
Thanks to whoever mentioned using cling film-yay! GREAT IDEA!!!
kind regards to all

Ooh yes...forgot about that really important advice; no hoovering, ironing, washing, cooking, cleaning, bed changing, gardening lol. Fun stuff is definitely allowed. You are going to be a busy boy Antony!
Hope the fitting went well, if it's feeling a bit sore let her know it goes off pretty quickly and it is surprising how soon you don't notice it. I was mortified with mine at first, now it's no bother at all!
all the best

ANDa nice small hottie bottle keeps the vein open and reaally soothes it....I'm addicted to mine but I've had problems so the cold can really affect my arm....you can tell that kind of pain when it's cold!
AND no stretching!!! Ie reaching up into the airing cupboard etc!!!

Hi ,
I have been reading the post's with interest.
I have had 2 picc lines in for 2 lots of chemo and apart from lifting heavy things and reaching high up, I never stopped doing anything, ironing, hoovering etc and my picc line was fine both times.
I used the Limbo protectors first time round but they split on the arm cuff twice, so this time round I used a Firststar full arm protector. This went over my hand too and had so much more room for my bottle too.
Take care everyone,
Pam x
Ha ha ha, my hubby was good too, he did do the ironing sometimes and hoovering. Xxx
Hi Jak,
Just read your profile, how are you doing.
I come from Stafford but live in Essex now,as children we used to go too Dovedale , we loved it, we used to climb the big hill and then jump across the stepping stone's, are they still there.
I also worked in a special needs school , working with autistic children for 23 years. I loved it , it could be tiring and challenging but the children were just wonderful.
Bet you love your job too.

Yes Pam stepping stones still at Dovedale, we love it there too, so pretty!
I love my job so much, I used to teach mainstream but I love this so much more ( took a step down to level 3 TA as hated all the box ticking and pointless paperwork that kept creeping into teaching!) am missing my little pickles, can't wait to get back in September.
How are you doing? Do you work now or are you retired?
