Has anyone on here had an abdomino-perineal resection of the lower bowel and what have their experiences have been please?  It's such a radical procedure....scared.

  • Hi again

I endorse what stevejhb says about lifting heavy stuff. Sadly, i got a small peristomal hernia whilst in the hospital as I wasnt advised to be VERY careful when rolling over and also passed out and crashed to the floor on the day of my release.

Im talking with my surgeons about a repair which may be possible via keyhole surgery on my tummy and also training for self irrigation which will ease some of the planning issues with having a stoma.

Im not phased by Eddie at all, he definitely saved my life and is a much lived member of the family now!!

I wish you luck with the surgery, be positive at all times and careful not to overdo things. I promise, the pain goes, the scars heal, and life begins again.

Ive done some poetry and posted it on the Express Yourself forum, and it may help to voew those?

    Keep strong

  • Hi!

My husband had a bowel resection last year due to having a tumour in his large bowel. He now has a permanent stoma but manages it well and is 2nd nature to him changing his bag when need be etc. Unforutnately his cancer has returned and he is currently going through chemotherapy treatment.

  • Apologies for the delay in replying. The op is scheduled for 4th November. I hope that I'll be able to enjoy Christmas.

  • Thanks for the reassurance about living with a stoma, and I'm sorry that your husband's cancer has returned. Best wishes for a good outcome from the chemotherapy.

  • Thanks Eddiestomart - I already have a hernia and will try to be extra careful not to provoke it after the op. You keep strong too and thanks for your good wishes.

  • Thanks for your message and I'm sorry that your husband's cancer has returned. Best wishes for a successful outcome from the chemo.

  • Thanks osb. He also has a hernia but refuses to have the op the correct it as it's on the site of his stoma and it would mean re routeing his stoma etc so he's not really up for that just now. Take Care.

  • Hi - I meant to drop you a good luck message, but got the date wrong.

How did the op go and how are you doing?

    Best - Steve

  • Hi Steve - please forgive the long delay in replying to your message and thanks for your good luck wishes. The op was successful and I've been home since Tuesday 15th November and although the wound where my bottom used to be still has some healing to go - dressings being changed every couple of days by the district nurses.. I think it'll be a good few weeks yet before it is completely healed. Getting used to the stoma so all seems to be heading in the right direction although there have been some slightly  unexpected bladder problems to contend with as well.

Hope you are well and thanks again for your message.

    Warmest regards
