Surgery cancellation

I had a call on Tuesday week from the surgeon's secretary saying that theatre space had become available and I was down to have my pelvic exteneration surgery next Wednesday. I had the inevitable mixed feelings - fear and relief mainly - but started to gear myself up and prepare emotionally and practically. Two days later, another call to say that all elective surgery has been cancelled due to Covid. At this stage there is no indication of when they may resume surgery so I have real worries about the implications of delays. I finished chemoradiotherapy 3 months ago now and was told the surgery should take place within a 12-week time-frame from the end of treatment. I am totally in limbo-land now. Any advice?

  • Hi , I’m in the same position kind of . I was told I was booked in a couple of weeks ago to have a lower anterior resection on 12th Feb . This was postponed 10 days ago as no green safe ICU beds available at the hospital . My nurse does stay in contact but no updates yet . She just says they are hopeful that surgery will commence in the next month . I’ve had my pre op assessment so I’m in limbo - it feels like you can’t move forward doesn’t it . I’m in a position that they can’t tell me what stage I’m at till the tumor and lymph nodes are removed . In the back of my mind I’ve got niggles saying what if it’s aggressive, what if it spreads !!
I had my covid vaccine last Thursday so at least we should have a little immunity when we finally get a date .

Sincerely hoping the beds and theatre space becomes available soon . Covid has impacted so many surgeries and I am sure the surgeons are climbing the walls . We have been fortunate that some work is still been carried out but the staff have been redeployed. With the infection rate and vaccine role out I am hoping the next few weeks sees a better balance . Sounds as both your surgeons are at least fighting hard behind the scenes.
Hoping to hear good things from you both very , very soon .

  • Hello I’m hoping as I’ve now been given a date for surgery you have too ! It appears that the hospitals seem to be clearing safe covid areas for surgeries to recommence .

  • Great news

    Onwards to full recovery!

  • Hi Takayasu,

I'm really pleased for you. I'm glad to say that I also got a new date yesterday - 4th March. It's to be in a private hospital as the NHS hospital where it should be is still chock-a-block with Covid patients, sadly. It is improving but still not enough to recommence elective surgery there.

I'm hugely relieved, as I'm sure you are, though, after 2 cancellations I still reserve some doubt that it'll actually happen.

It feels like things can move forward and while the prospect of the surgery is still terrifying, I need to get it done now and get on with the recovery.

I wish you all the very best, Takayasu, for the op and the recovery. I hope you will keep us updated on your progress.

  • Hi  fab news not long now . I agree it is hard not to think it might get cancelled but I think for the short term we should be ok . Sending you lots of wishes and a speedy recovery

  • Thanks to you both for the good wishes, Court and Takayasu. It's so helpful to have contact with people who are/have been in the same boat!

Here's to the road to recovery!

So sorry to hear about the postponement and cancellation of your operation. But also good news on receiving your vaccination, that will help with morale a bit  I'm sure.

I was in the same predicament of being anxious waiting for a date and time for an anterior resection. It did eventually go ahead, within a London private hospital which had a specific floor converted to cater for cancer patients only. I was wondering which Trust /  area is your local hospital? I am hoping you get some good news back very soon! Take care and try not to worry, I understand how hard that can be.

All the best and hoping your news will be positive, once your hear back.
