Hi folks,
I have just recently completed my chemo and radiotherapy for lower rectal cancer.
The results have been good leaving only scar tissue.
However I have a huge dilemma after speaking to my surgeon. He has told me that there is a 20% chance of it returning within two years, which I thought were pretty favourable. He seems to prefer going ahead with major surgery and fitting a permanent stoma. I'm 63 and have some underlying health issues. Heart arythmia, multiple past dvts, TIA, overweight and pretty unfit after lockdown..
My anxiety level are through the roof at present as he wants to operate in two weeks time.
He also said for those that are older and maybe incapable of having the operation there is the option of watch and wait which I'm leaning towards.
Any help would much appreciated.
Hi Robert
I'm so pleased to hear that you have now reached a decision. You have made the right decision for you, and I hope that the appointment with the consultant goes well.
I was also pleased to see that you had received a reply from cyclingjohnny who has been in the same situation as you are in now and he made the decision that was right for him at that time. It is always good to hear from someone who knows exactly what you are facing and how you must be feeling.
I wish you luck with getting fit again, I know from personal experience how easy it is to put weight on when you stop your regular long walks.
Let us know how your appointment with the surgeon goes.
Take care, and keep safe.
VickiLynne
Hi Karen
So pleased to hear that your scan results were good.
It's always good to see good news on here.
Take care,
VickiLynne x
PS too many "goods" I'm afraid - sorry
Hi cyclingjohnny
I was sorry to hear that your cancer came back, but so glad to hear that you are doing well and coping with the stoma.
I think we have realistic and face the chances that it might come back, but enjoy life as much as we can while we are fit and well. My GP said that my life wouldn't be the same after cancer, he was right there are some things that are now a challenge but it doesn't stop me getting out and enjoying the things that are important to me - so I'll be glad when this dreadful Covid crisis is over.
Take care and keep safe,
VickiLynne
I will take everything on board from your advice, It may sound silly but I was looking for a sign from my dear old departed mother on what I should do next.
It looked as though she came up trumps.
Many thanks again pal I will keep in touch and let you know how things are going.
Kindly regards
Robert.
