Hi, I am having a preassessment for chemotherapy on Tuesday. Chemo will start the following week. It has just dawned that I may have a picc line in. For some reason I am more anxious about this than the chemo itself! Can anyone let me know what it's like and any difficulties that come with living with one for six months please? Nerakbar

Ask your GP for a prescription for a 'limbo' it a waterproof cover you can shower with. It makes life a lot easier. My arm was a bit sore a week after, I had a big bruise, which was the most sore bit about it but it soon goes down and after a while you forget the picc line is there. The district nurse will come and change the dressing for you every 7 days.

You can get Picc line covers rather than using the bandage which is a bit more discreet on Amazon and ebay.

I'm the biggest baby going so if I can do it you definetly can. X x x x

Lol I used vast quantities of clingfilm for showering wish I knew about the limbo. I hate clingfilm now.

I got a picc cover from living with website

My GP was useless in more ways than one!! They didn't tell me about the limbo or free prescriptions!! It was my pharmacist that gave me all the info!! He also told me to go to a&e when two different gps told me it was wind!! ( I looked 5 months pregnant)!!

I appreciate these are old threads of conversation, but all the information is still relevant and helpful. Thank you all.

  • Glad you are finding it helpful . I think Macmillan likes to keep them that way so others can use the search function .
Welcome to the forum by the way !

  • I’d agree with everyone else that the PICC line insertion was bearable and I have a district nurse visiting weekly to flush the line. I was given an arm sleeve for showering and a bandage wrap to cover the tube however I left it in the hospital last week after my first chemo and having problems getting one online - my eBay purchase was too tight!  Good luck with your treatment. x
