Sorry, i am editing this message as I failed to present "properly" (anxiety took the better of me!)

My name is Marco, I (think I) am fairly fit, I do run every day. I am married to a wonderful person, have 3 wonderful dogs and I work in one of the best (I think!) places one can work.

Life decided to throw a spanner and the 9th of June I noticed blood in the urine and called 111. After a few discussions and exams (urine, blood, CT scan and finally yesterday cystoscopy) I had a diagnosis of a bladder tumor ("multifocal ~3cm lesion of the lateral wall of the bladder with a few satellite lesions around it")

I have an urgent transurethral resection scheduled for Thursday 8th July. The consultant explained that from the CT scan the area outside the bladder "seem clear" but obviously we don't know until after the op.

Anyone has a take on my chances? As I expect anyone in this situation, I am very anxious ...!

Thanks

  • Hello and welcome to the group. Firstly be reassured that bladder cancer can be treated successfully, and there are many of us here to tell the tale. We understand how you must be feeling at the moment. The not knowing and uncertainty can be very stressful. Good to know you have a date for your op. A TURBT (trans urethral resection of bladder tumour) is a fairly standard procedure. Usually done in day surgery, but prepare for an overnight stay. The tumour will be shaved away and biopsies taken. The biopsies will determine a stage and grade and the results determine any further treatment. There will be an anxious few weeks waiting for results. Feel free to ask any questions, you will get plenty of support here as you go forward. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Thanks Rily. Your story is indeed reassuring! I am glad you are clear. I hope in a few weeks to be posting similar success!

  • Hi mpb,Welcome to our friendly group.I’m glad you don’t have to wait too long until the Turbt. It is all a bit overwhelming at the start of diagnosis and the waiting for results is always an anxious time.Things will become clearer once the biopsy results are back. It’s important to drink plenty of fluids after your cystoscopy and Turbt. We are here to support you,I hope you find the board helpful.Best wishes Jane

  • Good afternoon mpb and welcome. Your story sounds familiar and your procedure is one you’ll hear a lot about here. The TURBT you are having on July 8 will identify the extent of the problem , clear out any unnecessary visitors and enable the medics to work out a plan for further action . Waiting for procedures and results is a part of the anxiety of bc but the anticipation is worse than the procedure and the results can be very pleasing. Best wishes, J.

  • Hi Marco

We have several things in common!  I love to run too.  I am also lucky enough to be married to a wonderful person and like you I have recently (in fact one month prior to you) been diagnosed with bladder cancer (mine was a papillary tumour of less than 3cms on the lateral wall and surrounded by a ‘carpet’ (as they charmingly described it) of smaller lesions. It is scary as hell at first,  especially the C word.  It is just loaded with associations isn’t it.

As others have said, TURBT is the standard procedure and although not the most fun I have had, it is comparatively minor surgery and most recover well and fairly quickly.  It has the benefit of not requiring an external incision so that is a big positive. That the CT shows no spread is encouraging.  It is hard waiting for the results to have confirmation of what stage/grade etc you have but the majority of cases are so called ‘superficial’ and can be effectively treated.  I made contact with one of the Macmillan Clinical Specialist Nurses in the urology dept at my hospital and she was fab.  She even phoned me with my results post TURBT, as soon as she saw them on their system and 9 days before the official appointment to go through these which alleviated a huge amount of worry for me.

People on this forum are great and although I am a newbie, many of them have years experience living a full life with and beyond bladder cancer.

Hang in there and let us know how you get on (and any questions we might be able to help with).

    Best, Blue

  • Hi

Im also quite new to this. I was diagnosed on 23rd March and had my TURBT and mitomycin on 16th April.

It all happened so quickly and there's so much information and anxiety. As others have said the TURBT is pretty straight forward.

If I can offer anything I will say make sure you don't rush your recovery, two weeks of rest is necessary even though you may be feeling fit as a fiddle a couple of days after. You need to remember you still have a wound healing inside that you cannot see.

Drink lots of fluids and make sure you take lots of rest. Remember to care for you.

This group has been an amazing support to me and I'm sure any questions can be answered by the veterans here.

    Sending love
