Hi guys.

I'm not used to this sort of thing but I was diagnosed with anal cancer on 20th May by letter. It was a bit of a shock.

I've not been able to speak to anyone from the hospital etc since I had the original endoscopy on 28th April. So have been left to my own devices. Covid seems to have had quite an impact. I'm in Cornwall. So we only have the one hospital!

Any advice or help would be great.

Many thanks

    Hi Ruth,

The guys on this forum did advise me that some of my tumour could remain at the first examination post treatment so I was not surprised that when I had my first post treatment examination 6 weeks after the treatment finished and (like you) there was an approx 2 cm sized tumour left. I was told not to worry and that it was not unusual for some of the tumour to still be there at the first examination after treatment (6 weeks) because the radiotherapy is still working inside and would continue for good few months or so post treatment. The consultant fully expected the tumour to be completely gone when I saw him again 6 weeks later (12 weeks post treatment) which is what happened. The 2nd examination 12 weeks post treatment confirmed the tumour had completely gone. So please try not to worry too much and have faith that at your next examination it will be gone.

I had a CT scan at 18 weeks post treatment to check in detail that all the lymph nodes and the tumour had been eradicated.

The radiation was/is still working inside of me at the moment and I finished my treatment on the 26th September, also it is very slightly sore even now when opening my bowels but this should diminish over time. It is surprising how long it works inside you once treatment has finished.

The Community Champions on here are fabulous and will be able to explain things (with the right wording lol) a lot better than I can. But I hope that I have been able to put your mind at rest.

     All the very best

    Hi guys,

I hope everyone is doing ok and feeling positive.

I thought you might like to know that at 26 weeks post treatment I have had the results from my latest MRI scan and have been declared cancer free. My consultant and his teams have been terrific and I can't thank them enough. This was the last time that I would see my consultant because sadly he is moving on to pastures new! I will now have a new consultant at my next appointment in 2 months time.

He did tell me a bit of sobering information, that my cancer if left for another few weeks or so might have not been so treatable and that's why they threw everything at me!! So I have been very lucky!

I would like to thank everyone on here for their invaluable words of encouragement, help and advice.

I now feel like my life has started again and the 25th March is my new  birthday!!!

I would like to wish everyone in these forums good luck, health and happiness and send all the positive thoughts to you all.

     Many thanks
