Hi everyone, I’m new to this group. My husband has been diagnosed with tongue cancer, his pre op assessment is next week and will find out if re-constructing from his arm or cheek. He also has to have right lymph nodes removed. I’m scared to say the least. Does anyone have experience of this and road to recovery etc? Thank you I’m advance
My husband has another appointment for a further pre op assessment where they will give further info on procedure and eating post op, I feel we are being drip fed,
Hi Mrs Kiwi. You are being drip fed because your husbands team are as much in the dark as you both are regarding recovery. I’m sure they will give you the whole scenario should you Insist but you’ll likely be overwhelmed. Trust them. I don’t think they are hiding anything.
I’ve been at the hospital this morning for a three and a half year review. I’m doing well after tongue cancer and living a full life.
Giid luck for your next appointment

Hi Dani
im so pleased you are doing well.
We totally trust my husbands team. It’s not meant in a bad way that we are being given little info at a time, it’s totally overwhelming. The waiting for his op is giving me too much time to worry.
I think what they are planning is amazing but my imagination is running wild at how he will be post op.
how were you? Did it take long to be able to speak/eat?

I avoided surgery as the tumour wasn't amenable to it so had RT only so can't help from that aspect.
I can give you a good link. There is a group called Young Tongues that you could consider joining. They are now 200 strong and most of them have had the procedure your husband will. This is their website Young Tongues
They have a pretty active social media page too.
I'll tag a friend Panch who is nearly two years clear of the same op. She might pop on with some advice too.

Hi MrsKiwi
I had a hemiglossectomy & neck dissection with flap from my calf in October 2020.
I won’t pretend its not a manor operation, but its absolutely doable.
It depends on just how much “nitty gritty” he wants to know, but I’ll answer anything I can xx
