Hi all,

I've been waiting couple of weeks after referral from my GP to even hear from Lymphoedema Clinic. I've got right groin and leg lymphoedema either caused by a blood clot in femoral vein or the lymphoedema caused the clot. I'm on active treatment for the clot and the team have given me the go ahead to fly on 5 December but I desperately need to see a lymphoedema specialist to at least prescribe compression garments. Does anyone have any information on either where I can find a private clinic (Google search has been fruitless) or even better, have a contact number? I've been lucky to get another three month post treatment all clear scan and really want to do this trip that was planned before I got ill. Any advice really appreciated.

  • thank you for your reply.  I'm absolutely terrified. Five weeks still in pain and leg huge and to think I've been trying to walk etc when I've got such a serious clot. I'm  seeing the vascular consultant to discuss the Doppler results tomorrow and I can't wait. I'm now worried what this all means for me if my cancer returns, the fact I've had clots surely affects my options of treatment. Anyway that's the least of my worries for now. I'll read your profile if you have one. Thanks for reply - I also like Suffolk and my cousin lives there - Southwold! Take care xx

  • Hi Summer,

I do get your situation  - really… I hope you’ll be ok tonight? Boring question, but do you have someone who can come with you, or who you can call tomorrow?

I’m due at my GP tomorrow, and have some editing work to do at home afterwards, but I don’t mind if you want to send me a more private message via the messaging part of the community. Would you like me to send a test to see how it works?

It’s going to sound strange, but it’s a relief to know that I am not the only one who has circulatory issues alongside a cancer journey.

  • Hi MrsDW.

Yeh that would be great. Im on rivaroxaban but knowing clots worse than thought I'm quite worried. My husband will come with me and is fantastic. X

  • Hi,

Just to say that I did try to send you a message on the forum messenger section, but it didn’t show up your username, so it looks like you don’t have that functionality enabled. Not sure how it works - I have never used it myself.

    Hope you’re ok.

    best wishes,

  • Hi Mrs DW,

I am in hospital awaiting a thrombectomy. They have me on really high dose blood thinning injections and the clot is not budging. I was supposed to have the procedure today but an emergency came up. I have been here since Sunday and feeling very fed up but know I am in the right place. Apparently this is an old clot and recent travel may have exacerbated it and made it worse. I am in a lot of pain and my leg is still very swollen. I have been googling and have diagnosed myself with venous cancer among other things as sometimes what they think is a clot can be cancer recurrence in the veins according to Dr Google. I hope you are well.

  • Hi Summer, Sorry, but not sorry you are in hospital, if you see what I mean! You certainly are in the right place. As I said, my daughter was in hospital a week  with a clot and was very fed up. The treatment brought her period on and she had to be wheeled to the loo in a ward full of elderly women and men. She was so embarrassed. Doubt it would bother her now, but she was only 22 at the time.

Hope they manage to sort you soon, and keep your chin up. xxx

  • Hi NannyAnny,

Thanks for your message and oh I can imagine the absolute horror for a 22 year old! Did she stay on blood thinners for a while?

The vascular surgeon I saw today actually now thinks I may have damage to my blood vessels from radiotherapy, my femoral vein has narrowed which may have caused the clot.

    Hope you are doing well.

  • Hi Summer, I can't remember how long she took thinners for.  Although you may need it, radiotherapy is nasty, as is chemo. The radiotherapy my husband had on his neck impacted on him healing up after he had to have a laryngectomy. He ended up with a 'hole' either side of his neck where food got through! It took 18 months to finally heal up, and they said it was due to the radiotherapy. He did go on to live another 16 years after,  and we were very grateful for that.

I'm just about to go for a walk while the sun is out. My lymphedema leg is making itself known and I'm thinking some exercise may do it good. Can't decide if its lack of exercise or the cold that's making it a bit achy!!

Its wonderful what they can do these days to sort things out. All the best. xx

  • Hi there,

I meant to say last week, how sorry I am for all the challenges that you and your family have been through. It sounds like a lot has been going on. I don’t know about you, but my leg that has more lymphoedema swelling tends to ache when I haven’t exercised enough. I must admit, I don’t always get out for a walk, it almost always helps, especially if I wear sturdy leather shoes or my walking boots - ie., the less attractive ones!! If the weather is less good, I put on some music and have a little kitchen disco for one!!

It’s really good to chat with people who seem to get the challenges of circulation issues. Have a good week,

    MrsDW

  • I forgot to say - if you feel it’s appropriate, please let your daughter know that something very similar happened to me when I was in my early thirties and I had to be hospitalised. I was put on a ward with ladies who had just had a miscarriage, and since that wasn’t what caused my bleeding (it was warfarin in my case), I felt completely out of place. A similar thing happened a few years later, and that time, I was put on a ward with very old people, one of whom was so distressed due to memory loss, they kept shouting out in an aggressive way. I could sympathise with them, but it made me feel even more distressed about what was happening with my bleeding. Thankfully, I am now on Apixaban as my blood thinner, and when I had my cancer surgery, fortunately all the preventative measures around clotting and bleeding paid off.
