As you will all know in this group, the day you hear that dreadful diagnosis is such a shock. 
I was first diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer last October (aged 49). The Dr was so confident that she would be able to cure me, despite the fact that it was already in pelvic lymph nodes. After 8 weeks of treatment I thought I was on the road to recovery and getting ready to start working again.

Then things took a turn for the worse in April, when after scans it was discovered that the cancer had spread to my kidneys, hip bone and brain.

I had several brain lesions which were treated immediately with gamma knife therapy. Has anyone else had this treatment? 
I am now on palliative treatment; chemotherapy, target therapy and immunotherapy. 
Even with this treatment, the dr says I have less than a 50% chance of seeing 1 year. 

I should have had 4 cycles by now, but I’ve only had 2 due to low platelets. This makes it very difficult to plan anything, as I don’t know when the treatment will actually take place. 

I’m not allowed to drive any more due to the brain mets, or take a flight. And I don’t have the energy to go for a decent walk. 
It is all very frustrating. 

  • Hi there mvic, sorry to hear about your diagnosis but it's great that you made it onto here and are willing to share your journey with us. The people here will give you full support, on good and bad days. With regard to specific issues like gamma knife, maybe joining the brain cancer group would be a way forward. Always ask the moderators if you need infomation you can't find immediately - they are dedicated angels. I wish you a lovely evening

    I'm so sorry that you have to find yourself here. This is a lovely supportive group of people, all with different cancers and experiences, but as you say, all have an understanding of what you're going through.

    It is hard to come to terms with being told your cancer is incurable, and also with the lifestyle changes that can come with that, like not being able to drive.

    Many people here will suggest 'taking one day at a time', or having a list of 3 positive things to achieve each day, or week....I try to focus on enjoying something every day, even if it's very minor, like buying a bunch of flowers, or listening to the Archers on the radio, or having a scented bath....

    I have also found dealing with the uncertainty quite hard. I don't plan anything more than one month ahead, for example. Even joining a weekly group or class can be hard, as appointments often clash with this. One solution is to try and find some sort of informal drop in community centre or Maggie's Centre which does not require a regular commitment. 

    I hope you will find support, compassion and empathy here in this forum. It isn't all 'doom and gloom', we do share good times as well as the hard times!

  • Hello mvic so sorry that you had to join the group .  I have found that this forum helps me tremendously as everyone is in the same boat.  I am very lucky that the cancer has not really seriously impacted my day to day activities yet and can still drive.  I really hope  that you stay on the forum to get the support and understanding that everyone on here can bring you.  Sending you hugs.

    I can only echo the comments of the lovely people who have already replied to you 

    Please try not to focus on the prognosis given by your consultant , it may not be wholly accurate and will be based on statistics- you are a statistic of one remember! 

    Hope you have something to look forward to today , I’ve had a bad wobble this morning (I often do first thing) but have now moved on and will enjoy the day as best I can

    I am very sorry for your cancer situation. It must be a horrible shock. It is a very hard and need to take time to adapt to the new way of life. 
    With cancer treatments, it often get delayed and make planning quite hard. I have subscribed to quite a few streaming services esp sky sports. So I can watch TV programmes on days I will fatigued. I also attend to the garden more and try to have fresh flowers every day. Just try to treat yourself every day even it is a small thing. 
    Maybe a nice smelling face cream/ hand cream/ bathing salts? Like a min spa at home. 
    Most importantly be kind to yourself. Always make a plan for something to look forward to even it will not always work out.

  • Thanks Lucy. My worst time is usually first thing in the morning when I go in the bathroom and see my bald head in the mirror - that unsettling (and upsetting)reminder.

    Have you considered wigs? They can be very realistic looking. It is actually quite fun to have many different styles and colours to change up. I saw it as an opportunity to try different things. 
    I have just got this wig this morning.
