i feel a little confused, when I was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, back in Oct 2020, I was told that i had a good chance of survival as I was only 49 and quite healthy. I would have 12 sessions of chemo followed by a whipple operation.

Now after 9 sessions of chemo, the tumour has stayed stagnant, neither spread or shrunk, yet i've been told i'm inoperable and probably have only 12 months to live.

They are looking at giving me SEBAR radiotherapy which i believe is an intensive treatment and if it remains the same, i will have 3 monthly checkups to check the status of the tumour.

Followed by another 12 sessions of chemo.

What do I do now?

i feel fine apart from side affects from the chemo - tingly fingers and toes and a bit of nausea. Do I really have only 12 months?

What things do i need to plan for?

I'm scared!

  • Hi,

Lasr November I was told that I had a life expectancy of about 12 months, if I had a good response to treatment. Here we are in July and apart from fatigue and peripheral neuropathy, I am off treatment and back at work. I've done what I can regarding practical preparations, as others have suggested.

I find the best thing for me is to try not to worry about the prognosis, other than sensible preparations, and to try to make plans to do nice things with my family and friends.

Regarding your mum, it's hard to know what to suggest, it does sound as if she doesn't want to hear bad news from you.

I hope that you continue to do well.

    Best wishes

    Sarah

Hi Doggymom71, I was also given the time up news recently and went numb all over- I have been given 6 months.

This group has been so great in helping to come out of the numbness a little as With the news I lost most of my thinking ability all I could think was I'm not gonna be there for my boys. I'm 41, single parent and my boys are 15 and 21. I haven't been able to make contact with my hospice yet but upon advice from here I've spoken to the Macmillan helpline just to offload my emotions.

I knew my prognosis was not good from the start but to come so soon was still a shock. The pandemic delayed me getting legal stuff sorted and I sort of put it to the bottom of my stuff to do. But reading posts from others I have started to get the ball rolling finally. In a way it's a good distraction because for me less time to  dwell on the inevitable on my own.

As you have read lots of people out live there time given by medical teams. I hope that's the case for you too, it's good you have treatment going on.

Unlike me do not put off sorting affairs coz then you can focus elsewhere.

I wpuldnt call it counselling, I said I just wanted someone to listen and that what the lady at the other end did. but got the idea they can sign post or possibly do more from her questions, I told them I was waiting for my local hospice to contact me who will have some psychological help available according to my CNS who did the referral.

I would recommend them though from this first contact to just offload a little if there was no other outlet for anyone like myself

  • Thanks for getting back to me. Im also looking at Marie Curie. Ive looked at their website for details. Im awaiting some palliative treatment for bowel cancer. Not sure how doctors arrive at these survival figures. I think everyone is a different case. Best wishes to you Heart
