I was diagnosed with Anal Cancer December 2019 I had operation in February 2020 followed by chemoradiation from mid March until end of April 5.5 weeks every day this was a very aggressive treatment . When I had my first scan after that in June there was a small amount of activity after a scan in October that activity had increased, more scans then was told I would need a lymph node dissection as the activity was in the right groin, that was performed at beginning of December 2020 recovery was slow but was ok except left me with lymphodema in right leg and genital area. Further scan in February this year showed activity back in anal area and lymph nodes again on right side. I was then told it was incurable but they would try and maintain it. To say I was shocked is an understatement and I’m still trying to come to terms with it. I am about to have my 3 chemo cycle for a full day and a pump attached for 96 hours after which I feel totally washed out. I saw the oncologist on Friday who seemed optimistic that treatment might be working he’s arranged an MRI for end of month and if I’m responding to treatment will have a further 3 cycles.

how do others cope with this news and treatment, sometimes as my cancer is one of the rare ones only about 1200 per year feel out on a limb

    Hi Deb

ive not been to good seem to be worse after each treatment than the one before, but I’m ok now thank you.

must admit this week I’m stressed as I have MRI on Thursday with results on Friday. If there has been a response to the 3 cycles of chemo I’ve had then there will be another 3. Not sure what happens is not a good response. I will let you know how I get on.

    take care and thank you

  • Good luck with the MRI on Thursday, it's great that you don't have to wait long for the results. Make sure that you mention that the side effects are worse each time, if you are having three more cycles it may affect the dose they give you.

    Best wishes

    Hi Sandra,

I was first diagnosed in 2016 with Bowel Cancer but was told they had caught it early and hopefully an op to remove part of my bowel and have a stoma fitted should help me immensely which is what they did but unfortunately I had to have mop up chemo just incase any had got away .

And without going all through my journey that was not the case and as with yourself it's now stage 4 manageable but not curable which on its own is a hard pill to take , without them saying there is nothing we can really do treatment wise .

But heyo they put me on immunotherapy but unfortunately for my body rejects chemo and makes me ill , so it had to stop and due to the fact that I had to isolate as well didn't help matters , but not having any treatment as not made  a lot of difference and I was able to eat and enjoy tasting my food too .

With regards to yourself have they offered you any further treatment ? Or maybe even pain relief?

    Keep in touch

    Hi Deb1E

I am doing ok at the moment I was able to have my 6 cycles of chemo, must admit it was not easy going and last cycle got delayed by a week due to low blood results. Had MRI & PET Scans in September & results on 30 September. At the moment the chemo has done almost a good job as the tumour is now minimal & node’s are clear so being left until December to see how it is going then. I have just come out of hospital as I had a bad case of cellulitis in my right leg which had lymphodema, intravenous antibiotics every 6 hours over 24 hrs for 8 days followed by the same format at home for 8 days with oral antibiotics. So just now getting some strength back and trying to get back to normal..

    how are you doing?

    take care

    Hi Jimbobs

sorry you have been through so much, cancer is not a nice journey.

regards to me my last scan results were the best I’ve had in 2.5 years, with the tumour now a minimal size, I see my oncologist again in December to see how things are going, but he said that I would be able to have more chemo and that there are still 5 treatments of radiology I could have, he is also testing the original biopsy to see if I would be able to have immunotherapy. I don’t have any pain at present which is good as I’m allergic to pain relief, but they have said if need be I could have fentanyl or morphine, but don’t need anything yet. I am having some drainage massage for my lymphodema in November so hopefully that will help, as I’ve just been in hospital for 8 days on intravenous antibiotics every 6hrs over 24hrs and the same with oral antibiotics over 8 days at home due to a bad case of cellulitis in the lymphodema leg.but onward on upwards, just trying to get my strength back and trying to get back to the new normal.

i hope you keep going the right way, it’s a shame the immunotherapy didn’t work for you.,

keep safe & keep in touch

  • I have no option but to accept it. Mine is rare to near illeocecal cacem, just one of a couple of hundred each year and probably explains misdiagnosis for Years. Mum was the same one of about 1900. TroubleHeartis rare happens to other people !!!. BestHeart
