2nd January. I was trying to keep my spirits up this morning by assessing what is looking good in my garden. I have variegated golden and green shrubs which always look sunny even when its dull. Some red cornus stems though they need some light to bring out the colour.
Several plants are still holding their coloured autumn leaves. A container has two very lush clumps of diascia foliage. Cant believe it has survived the frosts.
Primroses are in flower in a few places and the winter heathers are beginning to colour up. Outside my front door is a variegated holly with lots of berries, surprised the birds haven't taken those.
But no blue sky - there was a glimpse earlier but it's gone now. I have two nice winter gardens near me at Mottisfont and Hilliers Arboretum which have influenced my choice of plants over the years. Used to be favourite visits to cheer me up this time of year but both seem too daunting to attempt now.

Hi tv man well done you!!!!! I had to laugh at myself the other day nothing new of course for me i was planting some bulbs thought I had hit a small stone out my hand in to pull it out and I had found 20p well I shouted with such excitement the neighbours must of thought I had won the lottery ha ha ha or was having one of my funny turns I don't care it made me happy xxx
Hi Flippen Popgate
Thank you Flippen. I wish I could find 10p even!
I had a similar mettalic find a few years ago. Well kind of similar, I did find metal. We had bought a lovely little shrub, a hydrangea, and I decided that I'd put it at the end of the garden against a 4ft supporting wall. So I grabbed a spade and started to dig a large hole, about 2ft in diameter.
I got a little carried away and dug a nice deep hole until at the bottom I connected with something hard which didn't feel like a rock. So I raised the spade higher and hit it harder, then repeatedly did the same until a strange odour came which I recognised as heating oil. I had been banging the spade against the small copper pipe that led from the oil tank to the boiler in the garage!
Luckily I had been whacking the end of the pipe to a point where I hsd almost closed the outlet pipe from the tank so very little oil was coming out although a small pool of oil was forming and growing ever larger. Mrs Tvman's father was nearby and he was able to repair my mess quickly.
I can be accident prone.

Hi there oh I can be accident prone also the things you find I can't get my head around sometime I was changing areas in my garden this year and parts of it when you were digging I kept finding empty packets of crisps where the hell they came from I don't know not from me i know that much and I once found part of an ornament was hopeing to find the rest of it thinking it might be worth something but never found the rest of it just typical my luck ha ha ha xxx
Hi, Well Flippen, between you finding coins of the Realm, AP7 finding empty crisp bags and TVman striking Oil, I know who drew the short straw.... don't you AP7! Lol! Well, I have been trying to plant spring bulbs for the past while but it's either been too wet or I've been too tired! I wonder what treasure I might find!!!
Love Annette x
Hi
The oil strike happened around 30 years ago and do you know what? Oil then was slightly cheaper than it is now but I moved quickly and pinched the end of the pipe, stopping most of the oil from escaping.
Lucky old me and I didn't have to pay an emergency plumber either.
Take care and stay safe AP7

Don't be too concerned Annette, you still have most if not all of November to plant your bulbs. I planted all my daffodils and tulips in November last year and they flowered well. Mrs Tvman and I were planting some more the other day using the auger that I bought recently and there were lots of little green pointy leaves sticking up a couple of inches. Promising.
