2nd January. I was trying to keep my spirits up this morning by assessing what is looking good in my garden. I have variegated golden and green shrubs which always look sunny even when its dull. Some red cornus stems though they need some light to bring out the colour.

Several plants are still holding their coloured autumn leaves. A container has two very lush clumps of diascia foliage. Cant believe it has survived the frosts.

Primroses are in flower in a few places and the winter heathers are beginning to colour up. Outside my front door is a variegated holly with lots of berries, surprised the birds haven't taken those.

But no blue sky - there was a glimpse earlier but it's gone now. I have two nice winter gardens near me at Mottisfont and Hilliers Arboretum which have influenced my choice of plants over the years. Used to be favourite visits to cheer me up this time of year but both seem too daunting to attempt now.

  • Hi Millie

Wow, as soon as I saw your lettuce leaves a smile came over my face Slight smile.

You'll be able to fit a small amount of something on a massive leaf and roll it up inside the leaf and munch away at it.

I can't wait to see how your tomatoes fare in your AG, keep us posted all the way. The company who made your AG should be paying you for your great work regards publicity! Only joking, admin.

Our weather here has taken a bit of a downturn and over the next day or two there are gusts of wind forecast of 50-60 mph so I must get my large onion bed wrapped with thick, high plastic because they took a hammering 2 weeks ago and I wasn't expecting so much damage. This time I'll be prepared. It's unusual for such high winds at this time of year but hey, the weather is so unpredictable these days. How is it for you, Millie? More or less wall to wall sunshine every day I presume?

    Take care and stay safe

    Dear ,

You and tvman and the gang are always welcome for a meal from my garden. I have included photos taken after trimming of lettuce gone wild and the double salad with home grown peas and green onion.

  • Hi I too love agapanthus too and like prefer the pale blue ones!  Hi Millie  Your lettuce looks great but it's too cold here at the minute for salad, it's really cold and windy! Hi  I do deserve the telling off, I was even telling myself off while I was gardening but as you say it does become addictive. With the recent downturn in the weather, I don't think I'll be tempted into the garden this weekend! I hope you get your plants protected before the worse weather forecasted arrives!

Regardless of the weather, I hope everyone has a good weekend!

    Dearest , and ,

First daloni, I really like your agapanthus seeds at a 100% germination! I first learned to save seeds from my Scottish grandmother, she had jar after jar of seeds organized in her cellar, all labeled and in order. I like that you saved your seeds and they grew! I save some of my seeds also. If we were all closer we could have a seed trade day. Please keep us updated with your agapanthus growing, it cheers the spirit.

And tvman, I can hardly believe the transformation you and your wife did in your garden to make raised beds- absolutely fabulous! And your plants all in a row! Since you asked, the weather here in "Sunny California" has turned from very hot triple digits F to around 53oF overnight with gusts of wind about 20mph. It does dampen the energy for outside gardening and I think my plants are resentful of the sudden change in weather as well, especially the sunflowers seem to be complaining. And absolutely no sun lounging right now. I think my small hydroponic garden is not tall enough to grow peas for comparison to outside ones. I could compare lettuce I suppose...

And anndanv, You were right about tvman requesting fresh vegetables from Mrs tvman for Christmas therefore he needs a hydroponics garden right now. If she is frugal, I found my AG at steep reduction in discount stores saving almost 40%. Salads are good anytime if they are fresh- also I made my salad wilted with hot dressing ontop of the onions and lettuce so it was not cold. I am still waiting for the cherry tomatoes to bloom. Instructions said to only keep one of three sprouting plants per pod, I did in one, however, the second pod had two deserving plants so I only removed 1 of the three. I found out about AG from an academic fellow who lives in an apartment and she grew kale and collard greens in hers and she sent me a photo- so I thought I would try one myself. The speed is the best thing from 50 days to 20 days to harvest and when it does get cold I still have something eatable growing in my kitchen window.

Once it is not blowing so hard and is not cold, I will venture out to the front garden and report it's progress.

    Hugs to one and all,

    Millie

  • Hi Millie (I absolutely love, love, love your opening to a post ie Dearest...., it's so beautiful, please don't change it), Annette, Daloni, Ruth (you are always complimenting our photos for which I am so grateful) and anyone else who wants to drop by and comment or post a photo because this is not a closed shop, you're very welcome to join in.

Now what was I going to say lol? Oh, Millie your salad, with the peas displayed like that, looks so appealing and delicious, lucky lady Slight smile

If, and I really mean if, I get my polytunnel assembled, Mrs Tvman will be able to pick fresh carrots and dig up some potatoes for me to make the Christmas dinner. That would be so nice.

Yesterday I sowed some red cabbage and savoy cabbage along with some green beans seeds in the greenhouse. I need to clear out the crates and pallet to transplant my tomatoes. A little tip here. If you have a tomato plant in a little 3 inch pot, wait until it produces a flower before transplanting because if you don't the fresh compost will encourage a lot of green growth in preference to producing fruit.

It's cold and wet here with 40-50mph gusts of wind. Millie, here, 20mph gusts are called a light breeze and where Annette lives, they call them a trickle!

Woody is still guarding Mrs Tvman's raspberry canes and potatoes and looking wishfully at our beds of veg.

Sending my love to you all

    Tvman xx
