2nd January. I was trying to keep my spirits up this morning by assessing what is looking good in my garden. I have variegated golden and green shrubs which always look sunny even when its dull. Some red cornus stems though they need some light to bring out the colour.
Several plants are still holding their coloured autumn leaves. A container has two very lush clumps of diascia foliage. Cant believe it has survived the frosts.
Primroses are in flower in a few places and the winter heathers are beginning to colour up. Outside my front door is a variegated holly with lots of berries, surprised the birds haven't taken those.
But no blue sky - there was a glimpse earlier but it's gone now. I have two nice winter gardens near me at Mottisfont and Hilliers Arboretum which have influenced my choice of plants over the years. Used to be favourite visits to cheer me up this time of year but both seem too daunting to attempt now.

Hi Everyone, tvman I don't think Woody is lying down on the job but just self isolating like the rest of us!! Pet1968 You were very lucky with your 12 degs, we had a high of 8 yesterday with strong wind and pouring rain! Winter isn't coming yet, we haven't had summer yet! The poor flowers are getting battered and blown! Hope it improves soon and I'm glad we actually didn't get away for the long weekend as planned with the weather like this!! Stay safe, & stay dry!

Hi Pet1968 Well, today we had a high of 22 degrees and although we are to have showers Wed/Thur it is still meant to be hot! That's the beauty of living here, you just never know what the weather will do day by day! But WOW! 46degs that would be far too hot for me to handle. I'm happy with 17-20 any higher than that, I melt because we are not used to it! How do you cope? Is it a case of staying indoors until it gets a bit cooler, maybe later in the day? It is a very pleasant 12 degs now at 2.50am! Thankfully at the end of this week, here in Scotland we start a four phase ease on Lockdown! Hurray!! I wonder have things eased a bit where you are?

Hianndanv !
When it is so hot here, well you stay inside with air con running, like a bird in a cage. We don't need to mow the lawn then, it's all dead. Only in wintertime lol...about 17 degs now here, so very nice. See my hubby was born in Scotland and i come from Germany, so used to that weather you got there...but i wouldn't go back. Be here now for over 10 years and love it. We have been living right at the beach before, it was very nice but way to humid for us, so now we are in Victoria, no water close by but much nice to breathe lol...

Hi Pet1968 Well, usually our hot summer days are what you are getting now during your winter time, about 17! I can manage 16-18 degrees but anything over that, I melt. Oh I love the sea, or any water really, the Lochs here, the canals I can't imagine living too far from water but then we don't usually get the humidity. We are very fortunate where we live, we have the Forth & Clyde Canal less than a 10 minute walk from the house and Loch Lomond is a short 20minute drive away. The seaside on the west coast is 30 mins by car and the east coast is about 40mins!
I've been doing some gardening the last couple of days and it has now caught up with me! Our climbing hydrangea is just coming to flower and are the size of footballs with small white flowers all around. Next to honeysuckle which smells divine! Love to all!

Hi I have taken a couple of photos but they are not best quality because my mobile is an older model (but I like it). I have taken a close up so you can see the small white flowers and the hydrangea and honeysuckle cover a 7ft high fence. Hope this works!

Hi Millie
Great minds think alike! I have 2 old sinks that I picked up a while ago. In one, I'm growing some pick and come again red and green lettuce. In the other, I have some spring onions. The new season ones are at the front and at the back I have last season's spring onions, they're a Japanese variety with a little red colour.
Your lettuce are the ones grown hydroponically, they look first class. I love the little lights above them. I'm impressed. I must say, I'd quite like to try a unit.
