Hi

i was given a loop colostomy in Dec 21, after finding out I was advanced stage 4  N1 Anal cancer, iv had no problems with my stoma  infact it’s actually really help as for many years iv suffered with my bowels  always constipated, I do still get like this but just seems to be much easier to deal with having my stoma, I now  have a parastomal hernia which a hate, iv had to change the way I dress, and I have melt downs when going to an occasion as I feel I look horrible in everything I try on it really gets me down, anyway my question is, after have the reversal what should i expect as my colorectal surgeon said I would be going to the toilet 5 to 10 times a day I could leak poo, I don’t want any of that, does it get better or will I have to live like that, I’m going in for a sigmoid scope I think to check if all is ok down there I’m in remission no signs of  tumour but I suppose they need to check to see if there is that chance of leaking just want to talk to someone that has gone through both  reversal and hernia repair, I know everyone is different and we all heal differently but want to know what could possibly happen any advice welcome and thanks for reading

  • Hi to you all, and thank you all for the kind words, axvice and encouragement xx

I'm on the road to recovery. My operation had a set back, which lead to me having to be reopened 2 weeks after the initial reversal and hernia repair. I developed an absess under the wound and it was drained and washed out, but had to have my wound left open to heal.

Then when I was due to be discharged, I developed low blood pressure and my mobility was comprimised. I spent from 17th Dec till 30th Jan in hospital for rehab, walking with a frame, then progressed to crutches, and now walking with a stick. I also caught covid and was very poorly with that, low white cell blood count for 2-3 weeks.

Slowly in time I will probably be able to confidently lose the stick!

My bowels have almost returned to normal. There a few issues of diarrhea and pain.

So glad I had the reversal. Everyones journey is different.

Good luck to all of you who are considering having it done.

    Best wishes

  • Hi I've just had Stoma Reversal and Herina repair 4 weeks ago not to bad 3hrs surgery out in 2 days rushing to Toilet a lot at first and a few accidents but got Knappies on which helps a lot and after a while you seem to know in advance when you need to be on the loo I feel take care best wishes x

  • Hi  Geraldine,

well since this post I went under for sigmoidscope as the last time they tried while I was awake let’s just say it wasn’t happening due to pain, anyway the decision was taken out of my hands as when they looked they found 2 lumps quite big which is scar tissue that has  caused a stricture and so will not be able to go to the  toilet properly, so was told unfortunately I will have  a stoma for life, the biopsies came back clear no sign of cancer which is a relief, now on a waiting list for parastomal hernia repair.

Thanks for your reply sorry to hear you have gone through it, but sounds like your slowly but sure getting back to normal other than a few little things that I hope you get sorted.

I’m ok with the stoma for life as has given me a better quality of life no bowel issues anymore. Take care and hope you get things sorted
