Hi Everyone

I wondered if you can suggest alternative remedies or supplements for menopausal symptoms. Hot flushes, Vaginal atrophy, anxiety, mood etc

I had a call from the menopause nurse at my GP practice but she was unable to help me and suggested I ask on this site.

I was using HRT evorel sequi patches for 18 years and I stopped after my diagnoses. Obviously as my bcn has informed me I cannot use any plant based oestrogen as my bilateral breast cancer is hormone dependant for both oestrogen and progesterone. I’ve had one operation wire-led lumpectomies and am scheduled for a second mid July then onto radiotherapy and hormone inhibitor tablets namely letrozole as far as I know.

Ive had black cohosh, black seed oil, sage leaf recommended to me to name but a few but when I research I’m faced with ‘ not if you’re cancer is hormone dependant’

I am at a loss now so any suggestions would be gratefully received before I spend another day in the freezer

Thank you

Lynn

  • Hi LynnS

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Sherrye and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see you’ve joined the Breast cancer forum; I hope you have found this helpful.

I’m sorry to hear about your breast cancer diagnosis, I hope the treatment information on our website helps you feel prepared for your upcoming radiotherapy and hormone therapy following your next surgery.

I understand you’re having some difficulty with managing your menopausal symptoms and are looking for alternative remedies or supplements to help.

At Macmillan with any new, changing, or worsening symptoms we’d always suggest reporting this to your GP or medical team for review and monitoring.

There is information on the Macmillan website about Menopausal symptoms and cancer treatment – this includes possible long-term effects of menopause, practical tips for managing symptoms and complementary therapies.

Breast Cancer Now have an information section on Managing menopausal symptoms too.

The NHS website also has information about alternative ways of controlling menopausal symptoms.

With any alternative approach we’d always recommend checking with your medical team that it is appropriate for you in your individual situation. As your medical team have access to all your medical records, they are best placed to give you advice on alternative therapies.

You may find it helpful to reach out to others in the online community who have experience a similar situation to yours, hopefully you will find the tips and advice shared useful.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Sherrye H,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
