I am not sure if you will be able to help  - my dad is 86 years old and was diagnosed with MM in Sept 2020 - Back pain main issue and after diagnosis he was sent home  - chemo was in tablet form and all consultations were done over phone with visits to hospital for infusions for his bones. He did lose a lot of weight but on the whole seemed to cope. over the past few months he has had a number of falls one of which resulted in a fractured hip and in hospital was treated also for a urine and chest infection and was discharged with medication . Less than a week later he was back in hospital as a result of serious pain in his chest and back and was diagnosed with a  blood clot in his lung and another infection which resulted in him being very wandered. Today he has been discharged again.

My mum was the only person allowed to visit and at 80  , she probably didn't want to be a pest and ask as many questions as we would. I know there were many blood tests taken . I am struggling , I live alone and don't have a partner to share my worries with and do not want to burden my mum , she has enough to deal with. I have done some on line research which suggests that recurring infections are something which is common in MM and often at the later stages of the disease, however I am reticent to base my knowledge and ultimately my emotions about the situation based on a google search so have decided to contact MacMillian who I now will be able to give me greater knowledge of what to expect , i appreciate not specifically . i think that if I more knowledge of what could potentially be ahead i can prepare myself , my mum and all of us who love my dad of what is ahead and how we are going to cope with it .

Sorry to rattle on, I hope this makes sense , JIll Slight smile

  • Hello Jill,

Thanks for getting in touch, and welcome to our online community. I can see from your profile that you’ve joined a couple of our online groups. Our myeloma forum can be a good source of information and support too.

I’m sorry to read that you are struggling. It sounds as if it has been a difficult time for you all since your dad was diagnosed.

Uncertainty about the future can be difficult to cope with, and for some people, having knowledge about what might be ahead can help.

I’m not sure from your post if your dad is still having treatment for myeloma, or how his recent bloods were. This means, it’s difficult to know whether some of the recent infections he’s had are a symptom of myeloma or a side effect of treatment.

If your dad agreed, you should be able to speak to someone from his specialist team. This would give you an opportunity to ask questions, and better understand what could be ahead. You could also speak to your dad’s GP, especially if you think he needs more help at home. This could include having a care needs assessment carried out by an occupational therapist. They can often arrange for aids or equipment to be delivered to help with day to day living.

If you’d like to read more general information about this type of cancer, we’d recommend having a look at the Myeloma UK website. They can provide lots of different types of help too, including support for carers.

    I hope this helps.

Sending best wishes to you all,

Carole – Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
