Lumpy Mastectomy Scar

Hello

I had a mastectomy end June 2021.  I had three lobular cancers, grade 2.  My sentinel lymph node was also removed: that was clear.  After the surgery I had radiotherapy.

At my follow up I had seromas, but was told they would probably reabsorb.  The surgeon said the scar was a ‘but untidy’, and if it was a concern he would tidy it up in a year’s time (July 2022)

Nine months later it seems to me I have a very lumpy scar - the lumps are hard - and I have one area which is quite concave.  I have what I believe is called a dog ear.

Should I wait until my one year after discharge follow-up with the surgeon or consult sooner?  My GP is not very helpful.

  • Hi Loftus,

Thanks for your post. I see that you’ve joined our breast cancer forum and I hope the support and information this provides is of benefit.

For some people non-surgical treatment might be suitable for their scars. These treatments can help with the texture and colour of scars and include moisturising and massage, silicone creams, silicone dressings and pressure garments. It’s important to note that scarring can take up to two years to fully settle.

If your scars are not amenable to non-surgical treatments scar revision is a possibility and issues such as dog ears can be successfully treated with surgical removal. Whilst surgery can remove scar tissue it will also make new scar tissue, and this is something to consider.

You don’t have to wait until your first year follow up to discuss treatment for your scar. We would suggest contacting your Consultant or breast care nurse, they will be able to discuss your concerns and expectations and suggest what treatments might be used to improve your scars.

I hope this helps but please get back in touch if you have further questions or concerns.

    Best wishes,
