Well our trip to St Thomas' was to get good news... after 5 operations in the last year they believe he is BCC / SCC free for the moment.
He is however, going to have a therapy over the next year which is intended to clear his skin completely... it is applied three days a week and causes the cancer damaged skin to react to it and it may be red and painful - the course for each patch of his face is 3 months long - they are quartering his face - hence some part of him will look red and sore for the next 12 months... just what a 17 year old needs...
He has been told that when it is completed his face will be blemish free and if the cream is applied and their is no cancer present there will be no reaction present... so it won't hurt or go red.... if there is it will mean that any cancer is picked up early and zapped....
With Matt getting good and bad news... although from a mum's point of view this is all good news as in 12 months he may truly be cancer free... and the fears that go with this genetic condition will be tamed for a while...
He is always an inspiration to me in the way he is witht he medical people, he has 'banter' and makes the staff feel at ease... in turn they do the same back... making treatments and appointments easier for both sides...
Matt came with me to see his grandad before he passed away - Sunday we had a call and Matt said I will come to look after you mum, he chatted to his grandad and it was a treasured moment for the three of us... he shared the good news he got a catering apprenticeship which Dad seemed pleased about!
He has said he will do a reading at the funeral and this whilst making me proud of him, also makes me feel sad that he has lost his grandad and that he won't have those chats about footy or his goalkeeping, won't talk mopeds and cars... or just sit and enjoy each others company any more...
I joined this website when Matt was diagnosed and little did I know that within a year my dad would be diagnosed, treated and pass away... doesn't life work in mysterious ways!!
