The effects of radiotherapy

Less than one minute read time.

Hi everyone

My partner has recently finished 5 weeks of radiotherapy treatment.  Since finishing he has been unable to get out of bed.  He is constantly tired and has slept for 4 days.  He has no appetite and has developed a cough, which he didnt have before.  He has pain in his gullet which he didnt have before (he has OC diagnosed  8 months ago).  I am worried that he hasnt eaten much for 4 days and has lost about half a stone in such a short period of time.  Throughout the radiotherapy treatment, he coped very well, and it is only now that I see the effects.  Is this normal?

    Hi Sheena,

The tiredness is normal, I was the same after 36 sessions of radio. If you are worried I would mention these symptoms. to your Consultant, and he might

be able to put your mind at ease. All the best and good luck.

Take care and be safe Big Hugs Love Sarsfield.xx

  • The effects of radiotherapy are cumalative - in other words it builds up in and continues to affect the body for some time after treatment has ended. The side-effect of tiredness does gradually wear off - you just need to give it time.

Sleep is a good way to let the body heal so if he can sleep don't worry.

    Hi Sheena

My husband had 10 sessions ot radiotheraphy for OC and it knocked him for six he became completly dehydrated as he couldn't even keep water down so he was hospitalised for a few days to rehydrate him again ,he wasalso extemely tired all the time .It came as a complete shock as he had sailed through his chemo, and after all this the radio did no good at all so fingers crossed after the side effects have gone your partner will see an improvement.

    Thinking of you both

    love Marianne.x
