Gross Incompetence?

1 minute read time.

Hmm. Not impressed today. J has his PET scan last Thursday. Our hospital doesn't have a PET scanner so he had to go to Preston. They told him there that the results would be on his consultant's desk for Friday. Fine we thought.

We went today to see him. And yes surprise surprise no results. That would have been bad enough. But then the conultant told us he'd had his meeting about John with the team he works with in Newcastle and they had decided his back wasn't cancerous and he's a grade 3. We were over the moon for a couple of minutes before the little voice in my head said What? How can that be?  I asked how come the MRI people told us it WAS cancerous so he opened the MRI report and then got all stressed as he read it. It turns out he DOES have a big 5cm x 9cm tumour on his spine and there are concerns about an area on his ribs. He immediately prescribed steroids for 4 days, banned us from going on holiday (we weren't going anyway) and said sorry but it won't change anything with the ABVD treatment plan - but if back pain gets worse - or John loses any feeling in his legs (WTF!!) he might have to have a bit of radiotherapy during chemo.

We came out utterly shell shocked. How had they had the team meeting without looking at the MRI? How can we trust them? Everything else in the meeting was as chaotic as the last time - late. no nurse present, no offer of macmillan support, j's got to organise his own blood tests before his appointments. We are bewildered about it all.

Have heard of a lot of people round here going over to Newcastle for treatment, We are now looking into it. This is scary....

    Hi there

What a nightmare all this is I know, unbeleivable we get here in Norfolk.  My mum had a PET scan at another hospital but did get the results within a week.  The first consultant told us there was a shining on the throat but as far as he was concerned it was nothing to worry about but he would get it checked by ENT anyway.  Mum had it looked at then they sent her for a biopsy.  It came back negative but the consultants do not beleive the pathology report as the CT scan and PET scan say different.  I have seen the mass by camera so if it isn't cancer what is it, they do not know. It isn't a polyp or anything else they can relate it to. Then we went to see the lung consultant and she said there was no cancer showing on the throat.  Great we thought .  Then she read the CT report and changed her mind and said in her opinion it is highly likely to be cancer and we needed to go back to ENT consultant.  We did that and he wanted another biopsy done again under a general anaesthetic.  Mum was very bad with 2nd one, 4hrs in theater and recovery and said she will not be having another one done.  We go back today to see the results of the 2nd biopsy.  If this is negative too they want to send her to another hospital to see a head and neck specialist as if it is negative they do not know what else it could possible be!!  this morning they rang to say consultant has had to go home ill so now we have to see one of his sidekicks.  Can't be helped but mum was dreading seeing the consultant anyway and she really likes him and now he won't be there.  We are hoping it is negative again but that doesn't mean it still isn't cancer according to the consultants who beleive it is.  Nightmare!!  On top of that if we do have to go to another hospital we have to pay to get there, it cost £45 last time to go for the PET scan.  It is all nuts.  Good luck, Tusk x

Where's John being seen? If it's close enough, I'd definitely ask about being transferred to the Freeman in Newcastle. I'm seen at the Bobby Robson cancer centre at the Freeman and they've been brillant. It's more than likely them that the consultant is having discussions with anyway and it's a purpose built centre with everything on the one site, clinical trials centre and shops. There's also onsight cancer support and a Macmillan centre too.

I hope things are made clearer for you soon. Either way I'd definitely suggest you raise your concerns with them else you're more likely to be anxious throughout his treatment. xxx

Sorry Tusk. Sounds like a terrible worry for you. Our lives in their hands eh? Not good enough :-(

Lottie we are In Cumbria. It's a 2 hour drive over to Newcastle. He's spoken to his GP today who was also a bit shocked and said she'd be happy to refer him but she thinks he needs to start his treatment first and not have any more delays. We agree with that on reflection. Hopefully it's just a blip and once he's got started they'll be a lore more efficient.... could turn a person to religion all this worrying...

  • Hi, As Preston is in the NW then I am surprised that they are not discussing his case with the regional centre which is (I believe) in Manchester. You can always ask to be referred to another consultant at the regional centre or one of the leading experts for a second opinion.

Is Preston not one of the hospitals that have had some issues in recent years with all the scandles that have been exposed? Urgent referrals can be made and given all the test results that are available then this should not delay treatment.

Hope you get someone who can make sense of all of this and give you both the confidence you need in the team who will treat J.

Hi, we are in cumbria, no pet scanner in cumbria hence preston. But our nearest big centre where they discuss our cases is the freeman at newcastle. Confused?! we are too! (And yes they are in special measures up here too. he's going to go ahead with the chemo on thursday though and keep calling to chase up the pet scan. Think it's the only way at the moment.
