Lymphoedema!

Lymphoedema!

It's official, I am exceptional! Most people have lymphoedema in the arm, I have mild lymphodema of the breast, as a consequence of the radiotherapy, so once again I am proving to be not so normal.  The very lovely nurse at the specialist clinic this morning has given me daily massage exercises to try and reduce the swelling and as need to see her again in 3 months. There's clearly no quick fix hee.

I am feeling particularly “ugh” about this. 15 mins of exercises day and night doesn’t seem a lot, but once again, this bloody cancer is interfering with my “normal”. Alongside this my knee joints have started to become a little stiff and sore, a likely side effect of the letrozole tablets. Right now I feel like it's never ending and quite honestly, I’m just a bit fed up.  This too will pass, I know, and in the great scheme of things I am still very lucky.

Anyway, back to today's clinic She also told me to go and buy some ugly bras. Ok, that's not quite what she said, but you know what I mean - large cup, full support seamless = ugly!  Hubby actually asked if that was a brand; he may or may not have been joking!  So I've been to M&S and, as the lovely nurse also told me to lose some weight, I didn't even have the pleasure of a cappuccino in town.  I am sure that my motivation to avoid nice food will last about a day, but let's see.

But her advice didn’t stop with weight loss, massage and bras. I should exercise more, in fact I should start swimming! The last time I went to a swimming pool my daughter was about 8 years old! I can assure you that you're never going to see a blog post from me about swimming.

So it's now 10pm and I've just down the first set of exercises, fingers crossed that I persevere and that they begin to work.

  • I too have lymphoedema in my breast after mastectomy and reconstruction with an implant. I too go to see a breast pain/lymphoedema Sister and have massage twice a week and have to do it for homework lol. She too said swimming would be good so as a nod towards that I’ve started aquafit and I also go to cancer patients exercise classes. I know I need to lose weight but it’s never that easy lol. The massage is fantastic and has helped be loads… even the consultant was surprised what a difference it had made… so keep on with it!
