Daughter's cancer

1 minute read time.
Hi, I just recently joined, having been on the 'other side', the Macmillan Share site, for almost a year now. Our lass, C has had lymphoma now for over 4 years, diagnosed 20th October 2004. she has had a great deal of treatment, all the usual 'gold standard' stuff, ABVD, ESHAPP, BEAM, Radiotherapy, nothing killed this stuff off so she had a trial drug at the Christie hospital, a 12 week once weekly infusion which ended in September 2006. Miraculously, ever since then she seems to have been relatively 'stable'. she is checked every 3 months, scanned every 6 months so she doesn't add too much radiation to her system. The trial drug didn't do as well as the drug company had hoped so was withdrawn. C is remarkably well, following her career which is also her hobby! She has put on a bit of weight, being a very slim young woman, so that was good to see. She says that her cancer, like her, is obstinate! She had such a tough time with the stem cell treatment, the BEAM,( wanting just to die, she felt so ill) and wishes she never ever has to face a donor transplant, so was pleased when she was told of further trials for refractory lymphoma like hers. We carry on waiting and hoping that she will keep as well as she is now.

I saw your daughter (blonde) playing trombone.  She looked beautiful.    Davec

  • Thank you, Dave, she is booked for the whole series but might be dropped as she is also going to Peru this coming weekend! She has arranged a dep(uty) but isn't too sure if Channel 4 will be ok with that, we will wait and see! The short blond hair is being kept in case she has to have yet more chemo! It was quite long before treatment......

Love your pictures, especially your cute Westie.....

  • Our lass is back after a week teaching 'low brass' in darkest Peru, not really, since she was only in Lima! She managed to get sunburned a bit, but is now ok for this weeks' recording of the Chris Moyles Quiz show, having missed a week, also got asked to do 'Friday night is Music night' for BBC Radio2 next week! ( they wanted a trombone who could 'swing'!) She keeps being asked to do this and that, says she'd love one of the jobs she is 'on trial' for, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, says they feel almost like a family!

We await scan and result this next month, to see if she is still 'stable' or there is any further treatment needed.

  • C is still busy, bless her, the Chris Moyles quiz night still has a couple of weeks to run, there have been some great shots of her, none of me ( thank goodness!) although I was in the audience one week!  She is also doing a few concerts with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra this week, she is 'on trial' with them, the Halle and Bournemouth Symphony.

The recording for 'Friday night is Music Night' was a disappointment to her, she said they didn't cope well with the jazzy numbers they were playing, so she isn't looking forward to hearing the result. Her friend who was the conductor and she met up for lunch and had a moan to each other!

Her clinic appointment is now only 2 weeks away, when we will know what is going on inside, the node in her neck just continues to vary in size, and seems to respond negatively to stress too, interestingly.

We have decided to do the Race for Life, in Crystal Palace as neither of us can manage it locally, she was a fit young woman who was due to do the Great North Run just before she was diagnosed, in preparation for the Marathon, so 5k isn't far for her before she was ill, but now, well, it could be quite a long way, she hopes to be able to jog a bit, but i suspect I will be fast walking!

  • I'm up at daughter's house, ready to do a bit of gardening today, she collected me on her way back up after her work in Bournemouth with the orchestra there.

Then it will be clinic on monday. she hasn't been too well, had been fighting off a nasty cough but it has really got to her this time, she looks pale and tired, and was coughing in the night too.I only hope we can get her seen by a GP as well as in clinic as she might just need some antibiotics to help her, as the sinus pain is quite bad too, when she coughs badly she gets a momentary bad headache.
