Swollen arm

Less than one minute read time.

I hadn't intended to update my blog until after our next clinic appointment on Thursday, but something rather strange has happened.  I finished the short course of radiotherapy on my shoulder and neck over two weeks ago, but just yesterday I noticed that my left arm has swollen to double the size of the other one, right down to the hand.  In fact my face, neck and shoulder are all swollen too.  It's a most peculiar feeling, as if I was congested in some way.  Not exactly painful but uncomfortable.  I wonder if anyone else has had this sort of reaction to radiotherapy?  I had the loss of voice and difficulty swallowing, but those have both receded, so I'm just left with this strange swelling.  I was sufficiently alarmed to call the hospital hotline last evening to report it and find out if there's anything I should be doing to alleviate it, but so far they have not given me an answer as they are so busy.  I'm waiting for a call now.

Hello hun, I am guessing your symptoms are some type of reaction to RT. I hope you hear back from the hospital soon. Been there myself today to see onc. Nothing much to report! Back again there on Thursday with my daughter who has broken her shoulder falling off her pony! As of I don't spend enough time waiting around at hospitals.........:-( I hope you have a positive visit on Thursday xxxx

Oh no! I posted too soon. Spent all afternoon in A&E of local hospital, as Christie wanted to rule out DVT. But that's what it is - a blood clot in my shoulder!

Am now on clot-busting injections., and lucky not to be admitted as an in-patient, due to the kindness and understand of the A&E doctor, as I want to spend as much time as poss with my Canadian brother, who leaves tomorrow. The doc said I would have to be on these injections daily for the rest of my life, but has only given me a prescription for 3 days, as my consultant may think differently come Thursday.

Oh Miss S, so sorry to hear about your poor daughter! Hopefully young bones mend quickly, but I'm sure it can't be quick enough for her.

    Love to all, dyad

came as something of a shock.x

Dyad, wow a blood clot! Well I would not have thought of that. Is this anything to do with RT? I guess your  consultant may tell you more on Thursday. Glad they did not keep you in. It would have been a shame to have missed the last night with your brother.  Sorry to hear about daily injections though :-( Daughter now got tummy bug and is off school poorly, so is twice as miserable! Hope I don't get it !! xxx

Dyad, You need to be careful how you construct your posts. Telling me that the A&E doctor said that; you will need daily injections for the rest of your life, and then giving you 3 days supply, nearly gave me a heart seizure !!!

Reading on, I'm glad that they thought it worth giving you another appointment !

More seriously I do hope the Consultant is able come up with a better solution. Has the swelling in your arm gone down ?

I sincerely hope you had a great time with your brother.

    Love

    Graham

Haha, Graham, apologies for alarming you! In fact the 3 day prescription turned out to be faulty and so the hospital pharmacy wouldn't fulfull it anyway. On our second visit to A&E we were given a 5 day scrip. But we are going to see my consultant at The Christie tomorrow, and he will either change the prescription or give me a new one for more Tinzaparin, so I'll be well covered. Maybe I should have explained that the A&E is at my local l hospital, the Royal Shrewsbury, and not at Christies.
